The Russians copied more than airplanes.  Does anyone else see a little Studebaker/REO in the cab of this monster?  We provided our WWII allies a lot of vehicles, and they made the most out of the design work and spare parts.

Favorite quote about the Tu-4:  "The Tu-4 is what the Soviets built to scare Congress."

 

Allegedly/apocryphally, the orders to duplicate the B-29 "samples" they had were so strict that they duplicated field repairs on the three they had, and needed special dispensation to use metric-thickness panels and Soviet parachutes and radio gear.

I heard they even reproduced stamp markings or cast numbers letters that had no impact on being an airplane. Reason? Gulag!
