XB-38. A B-17 with Allison V-1710 inline V12s. Quite often you would get a completely different designation for a plane, simply by changing the engine. The P-40 was (mostly) a P-36 with a V-1710 instead of a radial.
If you want to see an example of the debate of blunt, high power radial vs. sleek, low drag inline, look at the inline engine vs. the original radial engine firewall in the pic.
A friend of mine "Jay" on pole on the pace lap with his 1147cc Spitfire coming off the oval back onto the road course at Thompson. Jay built this car from parts! (Jay's father Jack was an excellent SCCA racer in the Northeast back in the seventies. Jay is pretty dang good too!). This is a pic from the internet, not mine. But it's taken from one of my favorite vantage points at the current iteration of Thompson. About mid-pack back, in the red Spit with yellow roll bar, is another friend and fellow forum member Mike ("OF Racing") on the CMS board, who races a very famous and historic Spitfire.
Vintage racing at Thompson in 1975. Only time I have been to the road course there.Dad's Taraschi is in the background.

Wow! Holy Sheet! (The avanti pic)
BTW, I love the Avanti's styling and heritage. It's a great cruiser, and would love to own one! Especially a round headlight example like this:

I remember the old bridge. It's not there now. But there's a new bridge elsewhere. Thompson has seen so many changes since the early fifties. I hope it can stay as it is now for awile.
A pretty boring pic of the new bridge:
Spotted this tractor while out walking (I do a lot of that these days) and was curious what it was, so posted in a Facebook group. I learned it is a Massey-Ferguson 98, which was really just an Oliver 990 with a different grille and paint. And, yes, that is a Roots blower, just above the framerail on the right. That's because it has a 3-71 Detroit Diesel 2-stroke

Hang on, where is Thompson race track? Google tells me there's a Thompson raceway park in Ohio, but that's a drag strip, and a Thompson Speedway in Thompson Connecticut, but that's a 5/8 mile oval. The above pic is obviously a road course. Where is it? With my last name I need to make a pilgrimage at some point.
Tangent based on the mention of Thompson Connecticut. The joke in our family is that my wife's family, the Tourtellotte's, have been in this country since before the Mayflower, while I'm fresh meat off the boat. Well her family has a long history in this country including founding Aspen and donating the land for winter park to the city of Denver, they were also involved in the civil war. We have a copy of this book, 'Thompson's Tourtellottes and the Civil war'. There were two Tourtellotte brothers who were from Thompson Ct who were generals in the civil war. There is also a Tourtellotte Memorial high school in Thompson as well.
P.S. while the date of that pic is 1975, it could easily have been 1965, or even the late 50's. Amazing to see. I assume that's a formula Junior in the lead?
