My brother teaches at a high school for kids that are mostly lower income, and have been bounced around to different schools for various reasons. For the most part they don't do well academically and won't go on to college.

I am going to go and speak to them about jobs we have in transit. We hire for many positions with no college who were in there shoes. I have spoken at schools before but usually grade schools were I come in, tell some funny stories and go.

I know I don't have too long before they get bored so I am wondering if you were a kid what would you want to know, and if you've done this before what has or hasn't worked?

What the pay is, hours, how easy it is and if there's travel or security. Kids like the pay thing.

Funny stories work well for high school kids, too. Its partly informative and partly entertaining.

You can tell them about that fight that happened on your bus.

But really, if something funny happened with a co-worker, say it happened to you.

Don't talk about yearly salary because kids think that $39,000 is crap pay. If you say that you can potentially make $20/hr just to drive a bus, I think you'll see a better reaction.

More than likely they've got friends or know what their parents make or whatever and if they know their friend with the $8.00/hr job is driving a nice Mercedes (somehow) they'll think $20 is pretty good.

remind them that epic beard man got his claim to fame on a bus.

edit: Mr. Sperlo beat me to it.

Good idea bringing up the money by hour, it sounds much better that way. I have someone working on getting me some information to hand out about upcoming tests and internships and I am hoping to get in touch with someone about taking interested kids to a bus or train yard later in the year.
