I was cruising home from the carwash a few minutes ago when I was passed by some "playa" in a newish, bottom drawer impala with what had to be 26" or bigger wheels. Thats when the thought crossed my mind again (not the first time), I can't help but wonder how many times the addition of: Stupid + Lots of rotational mass + Tiny (and probly neglected) economic brakes = rear end colision

Can you imagine the skid pad results on a Donk with 4 wheel drums???. . . .

anyway, just thinking outloud

Oddly enough, most would probably do better than in stock form.....

for braking performance, the rotational mass is not as big an issue as the huge rolling radius converting the brake's torque into a much lower force at the contact patch than it would be with the OE rolling radius.

all that rotational mass sure makes acceleration suck balls, though.

indeed.. the rotation radius of those rims would certainly suck the life out of the brakes.

Of course I do remember a video of one dragracing.. until the axle sheered a C-clip and spit the half shaft out the side of the car with said donk style rim to continue on down the track without the car

20s actually handle better than 15's 16's I think 18s have kind of won out most auto cross fans because of tire options and the ability to fit larger brakes. Low profile tires and the right wheel material could actually lower weight and provide more air to the brakes.

However. I know those big crappy wheels are near impossible to balance and to keep cost down are made of inferior metal. Side to side that's a lot of torque when you put one in a bind. I'd be terrified to run one hard and crack a spoke then fall 26" to the ground. (13" to the ground)

that thought got me perusing craigslist to find a challenge friendly priced donk, ya know, just to see if it'd be possible

depends on the class/car ... you should see the teeny tiny cut down motorcycle rotors that some of the ST crowd used a few yrs ago ... again depending on the vehicle, you really don't need very much brakes at a-x

and I promise you that my CRX wouldn't handle better with 20's

I want to say I read something that said anything beyond 17s was worse from a handling standpoint, but better for braking. Something to do with bearing stresses and leverage on the suspension arms and unsprung weight. Not a clue what book I read it in. It might have been model specific which would make it a moot point for any other car.

I think a magazine (maybe even us?) actually tested this years ago. From what I remember, almost anything (even donks) was way better than stock.

Personal experience:

I work at a high end tire/wheel shop but rarely see these terrible ass donks due to the part of Atlanta the shop is in. But I have seen two donks in 6 months come in. The owner of the one pictured below was in EXACTLY the financial situation I expected him to be in. He had one directional tire mounted backwards, a nail in another tire that was leaking, the two other tires were separating, it was leaking oil all over the floor, and the wheels had more axle grease in the barrels than the ripped CV boots. He told us he had no money to fix anything, not even the $25 flat repair.

Its not limited to donks though. I see Mercedes come in all the time on what I call the "Deferred Maintenance Program". That is another whole subject there. Play on playas.

The Big Tymaz described this in "Still Fly" in the early 2000's. Hood rich. I love seeing the wannabe playaz driving their 10+ year-old German luxury cars in the middle of the summer with the windows down because they can't afford to fix the AC.

You can guarantee they've got a $500 a month car payment and $400 a month rent.

I get a kick out of all the tire stores along Eight Mile in Detroit. You can lease mega-sized wheels and tires.

What I hate is the fact that since these peopel do exist, ignorant rednecks now think that ANYONE driving a 10 year old german luxury car is a hood rich wannabe player. Even those of us who simply like those cars, and customize them, like mine:
