Gotta give em props, they know the oil money won't be around forever, so they're banking on real estate and tourism being their big money maker. Now if only the rest of the Middle East could be this awesome.

Have you been to Dubai? It's like a whole other world. I've been to Oman, Qatar, Dubai and other parts of the UAE, and Jordan. Dubai is hands down the most western friendly of them all, though none of them are really war torn to be honest. Just sayin Dubai is on a higher level than the rest.

My brother has been going to Dubai once or twice a year for the last ten years (work related). From what he has told me and the pictures he has taken the pictures in the link don't do it justice.

He travels all over the world as part of his job and Dubai is one of his favorite places to go.

I was actually involved in those island. Kinda weird, their coming to us about them.

Anyway, the that was then, this is now is actually out of date. They've lost a lot of money in this economic mess the world is in. Last I heard, they've lost about half of their capital. I suspect a lot of those projects have come to a screeching halt in just the past few weeks.

I can't even imagine how badly Dubai was affected by the bubble burst, considering how much of it is funded by the construction of new projects. It really sounds like a Las Vegas of the Middle East.

I was born in Dubai, in the late-70s. Didn't spend any time there - my parents moved to Germany shortly after I was born. But, they are completely blown away by the current city. My uncle stays in Dubia when he travels from Scotland to Oz. It breaks up the flight and gives him and his wife a chance to do some duty-free shopping. It's basically Las Vegas, but on an international scale. The sheik is betting the future of the country largely on tourism and making Dubai an international destination for wealthy travelers and business people. Will it work? Who knows. But that man has bigger balls and more vision than most Middle Eastern rulers.

The construction workers are migrant workers. They live in E36 M3 conditions and make E36 M3 pay, but this pay is higher than what they'd be making back home. Basically Pakistanis are to Dubai, what a lot of Mexicans are treated as here in the States.
