After driving 12 hours home from the beach, I was met with the aftermath of 14" of water in my basement and garage. I have flooded before and I generally have the garage set up so that everything is a few inches off the floor, but 14" was WAY more than I have ever seen. The result is that a few power tools got submerged; a drill, a palm sander, a reciprocating saw, etc.
They were only underwater for maybe 10 minutes at most. I drained them all as best I could by letting them hang overnight with a fan on them. Each of them fired up the next day just fine, and the spinning of the motor flung more water out from inside and helped dry them out. The question is, is that moisture slowly rusting out all the vital organs and they will be locked up in 3 months? Is there something else I can do to help prevent damage?
My bin of electrical wires went under. I think that extension cords and outlet strips should be OK, hopefully, they use copper, but time will tell there.
My Stihl weed trimmer also went under. I pulled the plug and drained the water and fogged the cylinder. I drained the gas in case it was contaminated. But other than that, I am not messing with it. My local dealer is a wiz and I am sure they can save it.
The V-Star got pretty wet, but I think that everything is pretty well sealed. I mean, it is designed to go 60 mph in the rain right? I will drain the oil and change the oil filter, looking for water. Not deep enough to reach the air intake or the CDI, so I think I will be OK. Anything else to check or do before I try to start her?
