Guy at work bragging he is getting caliper covers on his new Dodge to keep his new black wheels clean. I am going to pretend I know nothing about cars and say huh. (He does keep his black car spotless).

Who else fakes it to pretend to not know cars?

I was with a student who backed his car into a concrete barrier in a 100mph corner not so very long ago. We hit hard enough to stop suddenly... but not so hard that anyone got hurt (except a really good whack on the handbrake for my elbow). He said "It looks ok, like it's just the plastic. The air bags didn't even go off. I wonder if we can fix it and get back out for tomorrow".

I just said "Sure. doesn't look too bad. Give the shop a call and see what they can do." I didn't bother pointing out that the trunk gaps were very wrong or that there was a crease in the quarter panel or that the wheel was pointing in at the bottom... or that air bags don't go off in a rear collision. Why ruin his positive attitude when the shop was going to do it later anyway? I mean... he was already having a really E36 M3ty day. What good would compounding it do?

I do the same for similar reasons, but it's also because I "improve them" :)

Keeping ones thoughts and opinions to oneself aren't akin to faking no knowledge, it's more akin to good manners.

I didn't even know there were such a thing as magic brake dust absorbing caliper covers. I must be spending my time on the wrong forums...

and in my case, with my "limited" knowledge … I've found the old saying fits fairly well … "it's better to keep ones mouth shut and appear ignorant than to open it and remove all doubt" ..

sometimes I wonder where they get their ideas … but try my best to keep quiet

Some of my coworkers have brake covers that are black discs mounted behind the wheels. They keep the wheels from getting dusty and hide the stock brakes that now look lost inside big wheels.

Same here. Mooching family members and some friends. Had an Uncle call me out of the blue (he never calls me) to "chat". He finally got to the point after asking me what cars I'm working on. Says, "Well my truck ain't runnin' too good, it needs a rebuilt engine. Can you fix it for me?" Just said I don't know how, which is mostly true.

Everyone knows caliper covers are cool!! See what Moog and Martin have to say about this. Brake mods start at about the 28:00 minute mark.

Yeah, seen those discs plenty of times and those things cause brake overheating. Nobody wants to hear that, they are more concerned with clean wheels than properly operating brakes. My fellow humans are so stupid that I typically tell them "I let the smart guys fix them, I am just the guy who says 'you want fries with that?'"

Are we talking about these:

Or these:

The dust covers at least have a function. The plastic faux brake upgrade is stupid.

Has he seen the Honda Civic episode of Mighty Car Mods were they add these exact things? There were jokes a plenty in that one.

Because Ken Block made them cool again. Or tried. I don't know. I'm not cool enough to.

Does that mean we can expect to find those chromed out and in sizes above 20" in the future? Or in plastic hubcap form at autozone?

By the FSM's noodly appendage, I hate these things! I've been browsing evilBay for OEM Brembo brakes to upgrade my cars' brakes. My search results are polluted with this junk. When I type in "-covers" to filter them out I wind up losing many legitimate hits as well.

I have a nice Recaro seat on a office chair frame in my garage. That's where I sit whenever any of my friends or family needs supervision while they fix their car with my tools. This occurs after I admit to fixing my own cars and offer to show them how to fix theirs.Normally, I don't have to sit in the chair often because they'll just take their problems elsewhere.

I'm tired of giving car advice. Someone will tell me they need a new car, and I used to do a little research for them, tell them about all the different great cars out there, and then they'd just ignore me and buy a berkeleying Camry.

So now, every time someone asks me what car they should buy, I tell them "Ferrari." Maybe they'll eventually just stop asking.
