We live in a little neighborhood about 3 miles from "town" that for the last 9 years has been quiet and pretty much crime free. The last 6 months have seen a huge amount of problems to the point where we know have monthly neighborhood meetings, the Sheriff's office involved, and are actively setting up a neighborhood watch among other things.
Moving isn't an option yet, so I'd like to put in a home security system. We don't have a land line, which most seem to require. Is actual monitoring worth the monthly charge?
Do you have a land based high speed internet? There are services that use an internet connection instead of a land phone.
There are cellular based systems too.
they had a totally wireless system with cellular capability on ask this old house a year or so ago. it was totally DIY friendly, my tenant is looking to put that in my rental house.

Good idea. A little digging found this: Amazon link. Built in cell modem, multiple sensors, and no contract. The local Home Despot also had a "smart" garage door opener that is tied to your cellphone.
Here is some recent chatter on the same/similar.
