I had a former coworker that had a '96 Legacy wagon. He was pretty much the furthest away from being a car guy as you could get. I have never driven a slower vehicle.
In other words, a perfect car for a teenager
I learned to drive in a car like that. My mother's 1985 GL wagon. FWD. Automatic.
What did I replace it with when I got my own car? A 1982 GL wagon, although it was 4WD with a 4 spd.
oh wow, some fond highschool memories of the red twin to that car, the "Nudaru". 3 guys, 3 gals, and a polaroid. That's all i'm going to say about that.

my '96 Impreza was a AA Fuelly compared to my earlier 4x4 Suby GL's
I would have been very happy to have that instead of a Daewoo Cielo for my first car. I think that thing permanently damaged my sex life
I had a 4wd 97 legacy wagon that got totaled, I miss that thing. Yeah, it was an automatic, yeah it was a dog that had a rough time getting out of its own way, but it had SO much utility!

Good luck! Most of those up here have returned to the earth (at least that age). Later 90's and early 2000's can be had easily though.
I still kick myself for not buying a 96 or 97 (I forget) Outback for $700 that my friends offered me. I needed to make the decision in 5 minutes, and at that time I couldn't get ahold of SWMBO--normally I wouldn't be asking for permission, but it was my turn to pay rent which was due in a day, and if I did and she couldn't cover it, I'd have been in big trouble.
She could cover it.
My life might have turned out quite different if that had been my first car rather than an MG Midget. I coulda been somebody...
