No, I lived in the south my whole life. It is racism.

I will be a dissenting voice and say Mad Max is a worthwhile nominee. It is different from typical Oscar bait, but it's good that they're willing to consider an action genre piece.

Mad Max deserves consideration because it really demonstrates what an action movie can be. It is a near perfect execution of the genre. Everything is tight. Everything drives the plot forward.

It was a movie that wasn't trying to be smarter than you. You can turn your brain off, veg out, and have fun. But at no point do you have to suspend disbelief. But it works better than a turn-your-brain off typical action flick. You can rewatch it and catch new and interesting things. You can analyze and discuss it.

Although the plot is incredibly simple, it actually deals with a lot of themes that aren't. Unlike most artsy fartsy films it neither beats you over the head with a message about its themes (as much as people call it uber-feminist it's actually smarter and deeper than that) nor does it leave them everyone-dies "gritty" to the point of being a cop-out.

Mad Max is a great film because you can enjoy it whether you prefer to turn your brain off and watch 'splosions or you want to discuss complex post-apocalyptic themes.

All figured, it is a tighter, better executed and deeper movie than either The Martian or The Revenant. Honestly, I would compare Mad Max and Revenant side by side. They are both ongoing chase scene, suffering hero, genre movies. But Revenant drags and you hit the point of saying "I get it! His life sucks!" Mad Max accomplishes the same thing, but never drags.

So, yeah. Mad Max: Fury Road totally deserves the nomination. Should it win? I dunno.

Now... why Strait Outta Compton didn't get nominated, that's a whole other story. I'd say it also deserved nomination above other things on that list.

If A nominee for best picture is one that is supposed to make you fee something, why does that have to be mushy melodrama? What if what you feel is "BERK YEAH"?

I thought what I saw of it was fantastic. But I was at a friends house and piss drunk. We left(wife drove) some point in the second half. It's good to see something that isn't pretentious Oscar bait get a nod.

How Shakespeare beat out Private Ryan...

Or Dances With Wolves beat out Goodfellas.

Because the academy got to feel white-guilty and great-white-saviory at the same time.

Maybe because Dances With Wolves had less berkeley in it.

And the writing/worldbuilding. One nice thing about this movie, which goes true for ALL of the Mad Max movies (even that crappy one with the dome and stuff) is that every character has a backstory and motives. Every one. And it's not spoonfed to the viewer, it's just there and you can discover it for yourself.

Or you can sit there and watch explosions and think it's boring.

The moment someone makes a Doof Warrior bobblehead that plays the guitar instead of bobbling its head, I'll buy one.

I actually fell asleep during the night scene when the truck got stuck and had to rewind.

Oscar nod I'm OK with that. Perfect execution? I will be the dissent on that one.

Eh, I also was in the deep south my entire life and I'll disagree. It's not that.....black and white.
