[edit] Let me amend that to say "Many people swear...". Of course, some people have genuine issues outside of their control.

One is an investment though. Probably 75%, if not more, can be recovered for the mechanic.

As a teacher AND a former mechanic - I'll spend my money on tools to get the job done easier and faster so I can get paid more, absolutely. I've done that as a mechanic AND as a teacher.
But I will NOT spend MY money to buy books, pencils, staples, glue, glitter, blah blah blah, materials and supplies the kiddies NEED. I'll do that when my roofer gives me the shingles for free out of his own pocket; when my contractor foots the materials himself; when the clothing store gives the clothes to me for free. Learning materials and supplies should be paid for by the school system. And many school systems rely on the kindness of teachers to carry the financial load out of their pockets - that's wrong.

I did both as well. I think the loans I took out and paid for for my degrees might be more than most tool sets. Well, maybe not a full Snap-on set!? lol

That was how I understood the meme to be, not implying that teachers should provide school supplies.
That's b.s. that's what taxes should be paying for.

Yah, my employer buys consumables, any tools I buy are mine and I keep them. Teachers don't keep art supplies and other materials, those are consumables!
Also have a tool allowance, I get a dollar in a tool account for every labor hour I do. I let it accumulate and buy things like my work laptop, or my thermal imager. Because I used it a couple times for diagnostic purposes, I also have an HP Tuners dongle...
