Ug. Okay so like three decades ago or so, there was an episode of a certain cartoon that had a cult following on Usenet, and I was part of that cult. There was a PSA-type episode where three of the characters found a bottle of beer and shared it, and turned into unshaven, disheveled, sloppy drunk caricatures, and 8 minutes of painfully bad PSA "This is what will happen to YOU!" followed.
One of the netizens quite rightly pointed out that this kind of crap has the opposite effect. "No child ever asks permission to make a bad decision", and anybody who was ever a child understands this as deep as white is deep on rice. So one finds beer, drinks it, and all the bad stuff that Authority says will happen with one swig of beer... doesn't happen!

So when I started to find out about all those marihuana scared-straight movies, I laughed. Because those movies had a total Barbara Streisand effect: when the youfs found out that one toke did NOT, in fact, cause them to put their baby in the oven or whatever, they figured adults were idiots, and began to distrust authority as a general rule.
