"Returns" are the paperwork you send to the IRS.
"Refunds" are the checks you get back if your employer is a farking idiot and screws up your withholdings so the IRS owes you money after the end of the year.
I have filed 25 years of returns and rarely recieved a refund. Usually owe a few hundred bucks, because my income is a little volatile so the normal calculations are off.
