Apparently the roles of commas and periods have been reversed in some metric speaking countries. Maybe some math nerds can elaborate?
Commas are decimals in some languages, yes.
The funny/sad thing is, this is changing because of the Internet homogenizing things.
No, it's not sad, it's good in this case. The decimal point marks a clear change from integers to fractional numbers. Using a comma there is just berking stupid.
The US is dumb for not using the metric system, but I'm sure glad we don't do that E36 M3.

It's just a different way of doing the exact same thing.
Instead of "1,234,567.89", you'd write it "1.234.567,89".

I understand exactly how it works. I just think it's dumb.
A comma marks an intermediate place in a sentence - it's put there to organize the words into phrases and to help you parse the meaning from start to finish. The period marks the definitive end of one sentence and the transition to a different one.
Therefore it makes sense that the comma should be used for wayfinding - separating large numbers into manageable groups - such as 3,597,000.
As I said above, the decimal point marks the end of whole numbers and the beginning of fractional numbers. It is much more analogous to a period marking the end of a sentence.
