Was talking to a coworker about previous vehicles and I got talking about my Subaru Loyale 4WD wagon, which got me thinking how much I loved that car and would enjoy having another. But I wouldn't want to drive it in the snow, because they dissolve faster than Kool-Aid, but the best part of owning that car was plowing through 18" deep snow in the parking lot with it in 4WD.

That's the thing that is both awesome and sucks, isn't it.

My Subaru GL was a beast in the winter.  So was my Golf (which, interestingly enough was a GL, although it has GTI brakes and suspension because everyone did that).  If I stumbled on either one of those today, I wouldn't buy it because I wouldn't want to drive them for fear of them disintegrating, and if ya don't want to drive them, why bother?

This is kinda why I wouldn't mind if someone bought the Quantum.  I could use the space, but realistically there are like two people who geek out over them, and I bought it from the other one.

We went to see Elton John on his farewell tour last year and the Eagles the year before and both were fantastic concerts we'll never forget. We'd certainly be going to see McCartney if the tickets weren't statospherically expensive.

Contrarily, I'd always wanted to go see Meat Loaf, but after listening to some of the songs from the last album decided that it was certain to be too disappointing and opted not to.

I paid to see Elton John around 1990. He came out to a standing ovation, played about a song and a half and said, "I can't do this anymore", and walked off the stage. We sat there for about ten minutes and then the lights came on and it was over.

Elton John kept my money though.

He still owes me a concert.

I saw Meatloaf, and he worked harder than anybody I've ever seen on stage before, although the girl who sang on "Paradise..." wasn't even born until years after the song became a hit.

Ugh.  Math sucks.

If someone offered me $2k for my Volvo right now, I'd sell it and buy a friend's STi.

This is because I like to forget how enginey Subaru turbo 2.5s are and that I do not make the best decisions sometimes.

Those era Subarus are just low-horsepower competency. Lock it in 4WD and keep your foot to the floor and they go wherever you want them too. I remember we had a bad lake-effect storm that dumped 12-15" overnight. Work didn't close (they never do) so I hit the road and was the only car moving. Get to work, and the parking lot hadn't been plowed yet. All the 4WD Sierras and Silverados were getting stuck in the parking lot and I just came motoring on in pushing snow with the front bumper on dry-rotted 13" Blizzaks. I also was driving it around in the mud on old logging roads. Mud and water up to the rocker panels and it would just claw it's way out, the little 1.8L whirling and rattling and ticking away.

My Subaru had a top speed of 87mph, verified on many an occasion (the carpet was my cruise control), except for the final day, when it had no coolant, and the top speed went up to 92mph, I assume because of the reduction in water pump drag.

I hit 110 today without trying, with a car with a cracked engine block and reduced boost.

Somehow I find myself watching Kei car videos on YouTube and wondering how easy it is to find a 1-liter Fiesta nowadays.

the new ones? sedans are easy, hatchbacks are not.  fiesta and mazda 2's have just disappeared around here. Also my 1.0 fiesta was more expensive to insure than a same year model new mustang gt which cost double what the fiesta did.

GEICO said a new Focus RS was the same to insure as my 13 year old Volvo, so I am not worried about that.

(It was still a bit rapey, but somehow it is acceptable when you are paying $450/month on a loan for a new car vs. $120/month for a loan on a used car)

I don't like Toyota. I don't care to own anything they make. Maybe an 86 but it's not really a Toyota.

Confession: out of the 30 something vehicles I've owned, my hands down favorite was a Toyota.  An 85 4wd pickup. 22r with only 10# in #4. $500. On the go anywhere with only hopes for horsepower front, it couldn't be beaten. Un-stuckable. I tried. It did truck stuff. Wasn't super thirsty. Ran rough but always ran. And for $500 I didn't care. Beat on it, mud, rocks, whatever.

Then one day on my way to work a much bigger Toyota made a left in front of me (going downhill in a 55mph) and my 1985 brakes and worn bfgs didn't have what it took. Totalled it. Bent the frame. Toyota didn't care. It fired right back up and drove me home. Then I found that for $500 I did care. I freaking loved that little tired truck. Anyway. That was ten years ago and I still wish I had the thing.

Makes me think though. The best cars are the ones you can push. If you care too much about paint or speed you'll just be disappointed when some asshat hits you in a parking lot or when John Smith has a bigger wallet and buys a faster car. Which brings me to..,

confession B:

I am super bored with horsepower wars. In a world where your average minivan has 300hp and just about anyone can buy a 500hp muscle car, or 700, or 800. Who cares? Talked with a sales guy I know yesterday who sells Fords. Mildly asked what's the best way to find a used 2015+ mustang and it started. "You should see the Rousch in our showroom. Over 700 horsepower!" Yeah man. Cool. They guy over at McDs in the Hellcat has that much. Those three corvettes at the stoplight have that much. The Tesla going the other way would beat them all. But I digress.

Point is, somewhere there is a perfect balance between fun, function, price and aesthetics. If I pay too much for a car it takes the fun away. On the flip side, if something is always broken that isn't fun either.  I quite like my $1500 88hp mustang. Maybe as much as my old pickup. Something I trust while knowing it'll need some attention. it makes great noises. I like the looks and the trash paint means I can set my toolbox on the roof. It'll haul my family and still manages 25mpgs. I get to race every day. What a treat.

There's a lot of truth in those words.
My confession? I'm seriously contemplating painting the Ramcharger flat black and just doing mechanical and interior work to bring it up to snuff. I don't want a showroom car, I want a trail rig I can beat on and not worry about scratching the paint...

I have discovered something curious about myself. I love vehicles I hate. I realized it when I decided the other day I actually like the E36 M3ty 500$ jeep I didn't plan on buying. It gets terrible gas mileage. It's disgusting inside and out. It still has a mermaid life sticker on it. I...I don't care. I absolutely do not care, and it's awesome. I love it. Sometimes I forget to lock it. Most of the time I just don't. People park E36 M3ty next to me. Ok, I paid 500 bucks for this thing. Tailgate me? I'm out of this thing for less than my deductible. I will kill us both. I had the same feeling with the old Taurus I had that I paid 100 bucks for. That thing could have started on fire and I would have filmed it. My 350$ escort was easily the most off-road capable car I ever owned, and it had a blown rear suspension and drug it's ass like a dog on carpet. There's something so gloriously simple about giving absolutely no berkeleys about the car you're in, and even more so if it's a car you don't even like. I don't like jeeps. I don't like Tauruses. This was a pre bg chassis escort, so.....yeah not a fan. But in all cases, they're great cars, because they're awful.

That's the thing. It's awesome because you can walk away at any time and be ok with it. No skin at all. Makes you love it for what it does despite it all.
