We're 0/2 out of the last two big projects we've chased.  Both projects are right in our wheelhouse, with clients who know us and know what a good job we do... but both clients have had key personnel changes recently, and not in our favor.  We put a lot of time, money, and effort - a lot - into both proposals.  I know, it's always a risk, but still.

The one we lost last night was originally slated to be awarded back in May, and it would have been pretty close to a slam dunk for us.  But irrelevant technicalities (not from us) meant that they had to re-solicit the entire project even though the information barely changed at all.  The intervening months apparently weren't in our favor.

Just one single day without text messages from home about how terrible everything is. One. Single. Day.

My wife is angry with me, so the silence is deafening as she usually calss during her break at work.

So, be careful what you wish for.  Ultimately, she doesn't want you to solve the problem(s), just listen and empathize.

I hear you, though one day without any issues. Maybe even one day where things go well, though that may be delusional.

My wife is "angry" with me (angry is not the right word, and its at the situation, not me) because I've cut our allowance to basically $0 for the next two months.

Both rear wheel bearings are making noise in the Miata and I have a Pineview Challenge Cup on Thursday. So I decided to replace the one making the most noise on lunch break at work today. Got it all apart, pressed the new bearing in, pressed the hub into the bearing, then realized that I never put the snap ring in, which goes on the outer side of the bearing (towards the hub). berkeley. Try to press the hub out, and the outer half of the inner race sticks to the hub and pops out with it. Motherberkeley. Install the snap ring, keep the bearings and race clean and press it back together, and ordered another new bearing because I don't trust that one now. Also ordered new hubs, because they were only $12ea and it's worth that to not have to berkeley with getting the race separated from the hub.

Masks are turning people into the worst versions of themselves. I fear that continued exposure to the general public will render me one of them. Even simple trips to the grocery store have turned into a fight to not commit a felony.

My mom fell and got a fracture after a medical procedure.  She’s 1000 miles away, and there’s no easy way for me to go and help out for a while.  She should be okay to walk, but can’t lift much weight.  Her husband should be able help for the most part, but combined with everything else going on right now, I really feel bad for not being able to do anything.  Just hoping she recovers quickly.

Update:  She went in for an appointment today, and they immediately admitted her to the hospital.  Getting an MRI and I suspect will be scheduled for surgery very quickly.  I hate that this is happening to her, and even more so that it’s in Florida.

Thank you.  I’m kind of stuck here with having to take care of Linus, but still trying to figure out if there is some way I can get down there once she’s out of the hospital.  I’m sure she could use some additional help once she’s back home.

I'll be keeping yall in my prayers

Oh man, sorry to hear about that.  We'll keep y'all in our prayers.  If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.  We're going to be off camping this weekend, but we're back on Sunday afternoon if you need someone to come by and push fluids or something.

Thanks - right now, just hoping whatever surgery she gets works out, and she makes it out of the hospital okay.

I understand having fears about having family in the hospital a lot, I feel for you and her.

Happy thoughts sent your way

I saw two doctors yesterday. One is a specialist. One is the surgeon. Both told me very conflicting information. Great.

I get this daily as well when I'm working in the office. Every day I'm at work is the worst day of her life.

Just added it up. My wife and I spend more in a year than either of us made when we were first out of college. And that is just the utilities, mortgage, insurance, student loan, car insurance, and car payment. It isn't including our groceries or health insurance. In fairness, our mortgage payment (including tax and insurance) is about as much as I made when I was first out of college.

berkeley life is expensive.

Thanks to Covid, my wife is out of work and my side gig is gone.

Time for a third, and maybe a fourth, opinion.

1-My car works. It runs great, starts every time, and even gets decent mileage. I like everything about it. It is paid for. It is interesting. I have been through it thoroughly and fully trust it. All the maintenance is up to date.

2-I have a project I'm working on, and another waiting in the wings.

despite these two things, I can't banish the thoughts of hopping up my daily (stupid, I'd likely ruin it or break something) or selling it and buying another hooptie. It doesn't make sense, it always costs more than you think, and there's a good chance any replacement in my price range is going to be a basket case on the brink of catastrophic failure.
Still can't banish the thoughts. Classifieds are evil.

The last few mornings have been beautiful riding weather and would have been perfect to be out getting some exercise on my bike.

Unfortunately every night this week I've been up at least an hour later than usual (2 in some cases) trying to finish up the playbill for The Dancer's upcoming show, so have had to sleep in so I'm not falling asleep (as badly) while working my job that actually pays something. Over the previous three days I've spent almost 40 hours sitting at my desk between 9-hour work days and working on media stuff for the non-profit. And if it's a nice morning tomorrow.... I'll almost certainly be sleeping in as late as I can to try and make some dent in the sleep deficit the rest of this week has built up.

Well, berk.

My computer- a 27" Mid-2011 iMac is now 9 years old (I bought it as soon as they refreshed the model). It has served incredibly well for longer than Apple even supported it (I can't update to at least the newest major OS revision, possibly several) and I've been able to keep it usable by upgrading it over the years. But I've now done everything that can be done without physically unsoldering components and soldering in different boards from later models or spending many hundreds of $$ on things like an eGPU, so it's high time to upgrade to a newer computer that will hopefully be good for almost another decade.

Earlier this week Apple announced the updates to the 27" iMac line, which is what I'm 90% certain I'd be wanting- it's what I'm used to using and is inherently one of the most powerful of the models (behind the two Pro-line model lines). I've been looking at and thinking that the base 27" model would be pretty much perfect- but as people are starting to get their hands on them, they've found that at least the base model has the fairly meager 256GB SSD it comes with soldered to the main board... which means there's no way to upgrade it and I'd be limited to (slower) external storage- something that is not really acceptable when it comes to working with larger video files as I do when editing together the footage for The Dancer's shows.

I guess I need to wait and see whether the mid-level model is the same- I'm guessing not as you can configure the storage when you order it (you can't with the base model), and at least the mid-level model has half a TB in SSD storage (too berking small, but at least the it's the size of the SSD in my current one...).

For another laugh, I went through the 'what is your trade-in worth' for my current iMac. Their answer: $70. HAHAHAHAHAH no. I'll sell it myself for at least 5 times that or (if she doesn't decide she's completely over dealing with OSX thanks to her Mac Mini) give it to The Dancer since she's constantly complaining about how slow her Mac Mini is (yes, the Mini is newer but my iMac still smokes it, largely on RAM capacity alone).
