Yeah, about an hour north of me is a litle village called Copenhagen. They currently have 257 inches of snow, and are the snowiest place in the US. Keep in mind, it was 50 degrees and rainy and bare grass on New Year's Day, so this has all come in a month and a half's time. I spent from 9am to 3pm on my roof shoveling snow off on Saturday, and they're saying another 2 to 3 feet this week, with no forecasted days above 25 degrees or any sun. I'm running out of places to put it, and so is everyone else.

LED lights 8-10 years ago weren't as cheap as they are now. There might be something to that.

Nor have I lost any that I bought in the last year.  I'm not sure I've had any LED lamps fail.

My in flight meal sucked.

berkeleying search engines. I'm looking for information on the efficacy of a brain supplement called "Get Dopa". Two different search engines gave me several pages of results - almost entirely produced by, guess who? Get Dopa.  Someone mentioned a search engine that you had to pay for that brought in much better results than the big players.  Can I get some recommendations? I'd be happy to pay for consistently high quality search results. Would not be surprised if I spent several hours  a month sorting through waves of crap search results.

Omg, that search term is SEO'd to absolute hell and back. It's the site, the brand socials, youtube, and a few review sites that look astroturfed.

That should probably tell you all you need to know about the efficacy of the supplement.

Kagi is probably the search engine that you heard about.

My MIL apparently thinks we need to get the wife a brand new car because something broke on it and shes beside herself on the state of the car because of it.

The windshield washer pump died. On a 98 Explorer. Ever replace a washer pump on those? Takes like 3 minutes and no tools it just kinda clicks in to the washer reservoir, new one is like $11 too.

No MIL, I'm not buying a brand new Mazda CX whatever because of it. I understand you "only" pay $700 a month on the car with insurance but that car was literally $600 total with $22 a month insurance. The snow tires I have on it are more expensive than the car and it's the car that my wife drove in the middle of the night doing a paper route before anything was plowed so she's comfortable with it's abilities. And yes the 5.0 is a pretty proven engine that may have been used before. It has 161k miles on it, less than her newer Golf actually

WTF? Are people this worried about a simple cheap fix??

It's old so it needs to be replaced.

I have family who would do this with household appliances.  This TV is five years old, time to get a new one.  Oh, this TV isn't nearly as nice as the old one, it's so hard to use and the picture isn't as good.  But at least it's not old...

I think I forgot how to sleep.

Sunday I make myself not sleep in and had nothing caffeinated past noon, but was up every hour that night. Thought about calling in sick to sleep in but even that wasn't happening so I went to work anyway. So I was decently tired last night but still couldn't sleep until at least 3. A doze  would come on but something pulled me back but I was able to sleep in a bit this morning.

I hear you. I'm about 10 miles south of you so slightly better but this is a lot of work. I am having to lift the snow to shoulder level to shovel the path around my house right now.
Yesterday I had to trudge through ~100' of waist deep snow to shovel out a friends air intake to their furnace. They aren't of town and their furnace stopped.

Yeah, when I'm not at work, I'm battling snow. My back hurts, my shoulders hurt, snowblowers can't throw over the banks anymore, I'm running out of places to put the snow. You know how in movies where they're sailing on the ocean, and there's always that guy that goes nuts from not having seen land in so long? That's me, I'm about to dive into an 8-foot deep snow bank because I thought I saw a mermaid or some E36 M3.

If you try to melt the snow, it goes a lot faster if you melt it in water.

Had the pipe to the house freeze a long time ago.  The water guys came by, tried to turn the shutoff valve, broke it, shrugged and said "eh not our problem", so we had no water for a few weeks.  Fortunately there was a lot of snow to harvest.

Watrous, Saskatchewan, the town just south of us is the coldest place on the planet today at -41C. Yay!

Also, my septic lagoon froze again. The good thing is, I'm now certain the cold is the problem.

One load of dishes plus two loads of laundry gave me 2" of water in the laundry sink downstairs. I grabbed the poo-poker 2000 and hiked off to the lagoon. The 4 holes I poked last week were blocked so I opened them up and added a few more for good measure.

Hiked back up to the house. No water in the laundry sink. Opened the cleanout, not a trace of standing water in the elbow. WOO!!! I'm 99.9% sure I don't have a blockage anywhere.

Next weekend is supposed to be above zero.

It definitely could be that.

She's explained that she likes the vehicle and feels safe driving it in a foot of snow and in icy conditions, conditions that MIL won't drive her new Mazda CX in btw, but..    it's sooooo old and the WASHER PUMP FAILED!!!!!!

Also said MIL complained she can't go on her dream trip because she can't afford it. Bet you could if you didn't pay $700 a month in a new car right?

There has to be a lot of methane buildup under that ice... Maybe a way to keep a flame going to keep a hole open?

All my vehicles are paid for.

I had car payments once and I'll never do that again.

I had friends asking why I was putting a $3800 L29 crate engine in our 1999 Suburban.

"But it's so bad on gas!!! You should buy something newer"

My answer "go price out a 3/4 ton Suburban at the dealer. I can burn a lot of fuel for $100,000".

That was 5 years ago. Truck is still going.

Last time it was super cold and I was home;m, the heat worked alright. This time around, I'm gone and the heater seems to have kicked off entirely, leaving my wife to use space heaters til we (she) can get someone out there. Sucks!

I feel you, one year I have pictures of me standing in front of my basketball hoop and it's roughly knee height . We had to dig out window wells so the snow wasn't up against the window and dig 3 steps down into our cabin
