Ok, so ghost kitchens aren't like the Chinese place I used to go to that was in a building that used to be a Royal Castle (and still had Royal Castle tile on the floor) but more like Denny's is advertising under a different name?

In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :

I think a lot of times, a 3rd party "company" has created a brand of food and is subcontracting Denny's to actually make the food. The YouTuber Mr. Beast became known for this during pandemic-times, he had restaurants all over the U.S. making and selling his "beastburger" or some such

Never heard of a ghost kitchen.

But I've also never ordered food from a delivery app.

So, Rock Auto is a ghost auto parts store, to borrow the concept.

My buddy had been ordering from a place a few years ago, and became curious because he'd never actually seen it. So he googled the name and owners and found out that it was actually a place he was very familiar with under a different name. In this case it was the restaurant acting as different restaurants as part of their business plan. Last year my son mentioned a place he wanted to try, maybe for his birthday. I'd never heard of it so I did the research, intending to take him,  and found out it was delivery only, and owned by a guy who was subcontracted the work to other restaurants. So I guess it goes both way. I've never ordered food from an app either, and don't understand how those places are still in business with what they charge

I'm in a meeting with 100 people in it, most of them are on Teams, the guy running it is actually making everyone introduce themselves.  We are 22 minutes into the hour long meeting and not done.  This is appalling.

Sounds like the plot of a "What We Do In The Shadows" episode. Maybe the guy running it is an emotional vampire:

The guy running it means well but can be insufferable at times.  I'm sure he thought it was good for "engagement". In the end it might have been as we were all able to bond in a shared trauma.

I've held back two weeks but I have to say something on this. I bought a lift kit for my Touareg. Haven't put it on since yet. Listed it for sale. Then to bump the thread mentioned the idea of just putting it on the Touareg anyways and selling it lifted. Then I get this long reply.

TLDR: Forum guy with a lifted Touareg says don't sell with lift kit installed. Will cost 3k to install and lose $2k value. People don't want lifted Touaregs.

My points quick. I see it as gaining value. There's a ton of stock Touaregs on Facebook marketplace right now. The lifted Touareg/Cayenne is kinda hot right now. I see it as a plus. Here's a lifted Touareg for $2500 or a stock one for $2200? No one is going to buy mine and reverse the lift. They could just buy any other stock Touareg. I also have a set of wheels I bought for it and could find some used 33"s with some life left for a few hundred. Have the full look.

Second his money numbers. $3000 in parts and labor. And a $2000 reduction in selling price? Stock untouched I'd be surprised if I get over 2k. The rear does have a little sag, so maybe I'd get replacements from Rock Auto, but that's about $150 for both rear units complete. Maybe a little more if anything else is bad. But not 3k.

I started typing this at 10 am.

You are the General berkeleying Contractor on this job. I'd really appreciate it if you would do some of that GC E36 M3.

Why do I have 4 guys holding your berkeleying hand? Do some GC E36 M3 and do your job.

When are you going to realize that always going to the low bid saves you nothing when I have to show up with 4 guys at $130/hr each to bail your ass out of a crack? It's time and materials for me, but it sure screws up my schedule when I have to come in the last 3 days of a job and do weeks' worth of work. It beats my guys up having to work 12+ hour days. It beats your wallet up. Do some of that GC E36 M3 and figure out what is cheaper in the long run.

Why have you not already gone through your materials and realized that your supplier has berkeleyed you over again? Why are you paying my guys to tell you that you don't have the correct materials they need to finish your job? This is all on the door schedule and your material list. Why are we finding this out 3 days before the DHEC inspection they sent steel door hinges for wood doors and the doors aren't prepped correctly for the job? Do some GC E36 M3 and manage your job. Verify your materials.

When are you going to realize that if you schedule me for a specific day, we are going to be there on that day? Not the day before, not the day after, but that exact day. If your flooring guy isn't going to be there on time or is going to run over, you need to reschedule my team because we aren't going to be late. Do that GC E36 M3 and schedule your job.

Why is my guy running to the hardware store to pick up the materials instead of your guy? I will guarantee you that you are paying my guys significantly more than you are paying your laborers. If you let your laborer run for parts, those expensive guys I have down there can move forward with the job instead of pissing away their time doing your job. Do some of that GC E36 M3 and make the proper use of manpower.

For the love of God, can someone in the construction industry be professional? Please? Write realistic schedules that your subs can meet. These disorganized mad scrambles are a pain in my backside and cost you a lot of money.

Proper planning and preparation prevents piss poor performance. While your poor planning does constitute my emergency to an extent, I charge accordingly when it happens. Do some of that GC E36 M3 and plan for a change.

....

After an interruption it's now 11:30.

And now after pissing away 16 man hours, we are pulling off the job because your supplier has berkeleyed his part of it up so bad that even my people can't bail their ass out. You just paid me $2080 to do your job for you. Not only is it expensive for you, it's expensive for me because I can't start any of the other 15 projects my guys could have been doing today.

This E36 M3 makes me crazy.

Basically brand new is the new mint condition, but this is even worse.

2019 Sherco 300 ST factory trials BRAND NEW!

Absolutely mint trials bike. Bought new in 2021 as a new non current and only put 2 tanks of fuel through it. No BS this bike is absolutely mint! Just don’t ride it as much as I thought I would

No BS? How is a 6yr old bike that you've owned for 4 and put two tanks af gas through possibly brand new? You're an idiot.

OK, so my job involves running computer programs that a) generate output files that are not small- rarely less than 500MB, frequently multiple GBs and b) require a LOT of swap/scratch space for the temporary files needed while performing the calculations. The laptops pretty much all of us are issued these days come with 500GB drives- I have MicroSD cards that size lying around. After complaining about this on every program I've worked and wasting (collectively) days worth of time having to compress/sort through/shuffle around files to have room to run things, we finally have approval to get a 2nd, larger drive sent out to us. But now they're dragging their feet in actually sending it out- so I'm once again effectively wasting time trying to free up the space I need to do actual work.

Stop.

Tell them you can't do your job without the proper tools.

A 1T external drive is under $100. A 1T SSD for a laptop is under $60.

If they won't spend that, find a better company to work for.

I've been clearing the hill in our back yard of all the invasive honeysuckle that we've been neglecting for the last 15 years or so.  I've got almost all of it cut down and I've gone through three tanks of gas in the wood chipper and have turned most of it into mulch.  There isn't a muscle or joint on my body that isn't aching.  I just remembered last night that when I installed the fence, I set it back 6' from the property line in order to keep the dogs out of the drainage culvert so I've got more honeysuckle to cut down and shred once I'm finished with all the stuff on this side of the fence.

All of this could have been avoided if I just went out there once or twice a month with a little hand clipper and snipped off any new growth as it came up.  But do you think I'm going to learn that lesson?  Of course I won't.

Space is so cheap right now have them build a offline box and dump it to that. I have the same issues but our daily data generated is 50tB. I built a small 100tb raid 5 box to host the data while it was pushed to the cloud.

In reply to Toyman! :

Right now I'm just waiting for them to ship out the 2TB SSD for my laptop (our computers are locked down so we can't use external drives, but apparently we can install the 2nd internal drive ourselves and the encrypted bios will take care of it). It's not as much of an issue for the majority of people who are at least a few times a week in a facility hooked in to the company network and can back things up to network shares, but I'm completely remote and doing so takes a lot longer.

I'm also supposed to be able to remotely access a higher-capacity analysis box back at the plant and send analysis jobs to run there... but for some reason when I connect using the VM client I don't see the Tier 2 box on the systems I can access. I'm curious which is going to happen first, getting the new internal drive or the help desk figuring out why I can't access the remote analysis machine.

I have to fight the urge to reply with something similar to your last paragraph.

Similarly, I can't stand the "absolutely nothing wrong with it. Just needs a [fill in your favorite $300 part, that's probably not even the real issue]." That sure feel like something?
