I am looking to find some sort of night class to take during the week on how to do some basic car maintenance like brake jobs, suspension and engine work. I have always wanted to be able to do some light duty jobs on my car but don't have all the tools and don't know where to start.

I'm not looking for a career in automotive repair just would like to do some hobby stuff. So I don't want to do the UTI or other schools that have the automotive career path.

I plan on tracking a car this year and would like to be able to swap out pads and rotors when needed. I would also like to learn how to weld since that could be handy. Anyone know of places that do classes for this? I checked the local community college but they didn't have any night classes just full schedules during the day. Oh and I am on the west coast near Sarasota.

You might check with the local high school. Our local high school tech center has "adult education" classes at night for welding and auto repair, amongst other things. I took the auto body course when I was 20 or so, and a friend of mine did the welding course, and is now a pretty bad ass welder. I still suck at body work.

Like Corey said, check with the local high school or votech school. I'm actually thinking about doing that too. I tried that about 10 years ago. Community college had a class, was supposed to be a beginners class. Went to the first class, and it was full of young guys with a ton of experience and was way beyond what I was ready for, so I got a refund. Be sure to ask specific questions before signing up.
