I take solo trips every once in a while; just weekend getaways with a tent. I've lived the past 6 years in L.A. and was familiar with the surroundings and where I wanted to visit, but I just moved to Austin TX. I have no idea what is around me.

So, its time to get away. From Austin, I need suggestions in a 4-ish hour radius. I prefer solitude with the option of interaction, so suggesting a theme park or a state fair might not work for me. Connection with nature and roughing it are fine ideas. I like to have the option of heading into a tiny little town for a beer if I want social input, but I'm just looking for a flood of ideas at this point.

I once lived in Texas, in the mid '80s. Head down 59, I think it is, south out of San Antonio, LOTS of lonliness and solitude available just a few miles (or even yards?) off this road. No campgrounds, that I remember, but like nearly all of Texas, VERY flat....good for walking. Beeville makes a hub, for better or worse, for trekking in the emptiness of south central Texas.

The hill country north of San Antonio is nice.

There's all manner of stuff within 2 or 3 hours of you. As was mentioned enchanted Rock is nice, and there are lots of other park-ish places in Central Texas, but if you really want wilderness, head West and/or Southwest (as was also mentioned).

Welcome to Texas.

Ditto that. I've been around the hill country in that area a fair bit (over five years ago, mind you) and it was really nice. Nice scenery, nice people, great roads up in the hills, lots of little towns with not much going on. Not sure about camping, we were with a group and stayed in hotels. I plan on going back some day, I kept my favorite routes to revisit when i return.

Same, we love hill country. We use to head up to Bandera, Tx on weekends from the Rio Grande Valley. There is a State park that has mule trails, and primative camping close by.
