As it turns out, the sound a Mac makes when you take a screenshot or snap a pic with an iPhone came from a real camera: the Canon AE-1.

The things you learn. Thanks, Colin.
I grew up with an A-1, so I guess it just sounded like a “camera” to me.
That's what I figured before opening this. Mimicing the sound of an old film camera.
Just like the 3.5 inch floppy disks still being the "Save" icon for many programs even though I don't remember the last time I even saw a computer with one.
I'm on my 3rd laptop at work (we get new ones every 3 years), none of them have even had a CD/DVD drive.
I didn't know about the Apple sound.
OTOH, the sound at the beginning of Duran Duran's "Girls on Film" is a Nikon motor drive. :)
It's interesting to think there are people who make a living by coming up with the various notification, alarm and ringtone sounds for phones and computers. (and then they have to invent names for those sounds.)

I did as well. I am now going to have to pull out my A-1 and compair it to my phone.
BTW David if I remember you were getting your A-1 serviced/restored. I assume that all went well? I need to do the same to mine.
