I've got a Ruger Security Six .357, and I'm looking for an open carry holster. Shoulder, waist, something easy to get to. If it can hold speed loaders, even better, but not a requirement.
This is exclusively for when I'm doing yard work, because I've been finding evidence of very large snakes. Large enough I'll be alternating bird shot rounds and hollow points.
This is a heavy revolver, and I'm a big boy at 5'10 285lbs, so I probably need a bigger holster, but I wouldn't even know where to start looking.
I've picked up a holster or two at gun shows. If you prefer to shop online, some place like Cabela's, Midway, or Brownell's.
The Bianchi 7000 series holster is a good rugged holster for not a lot of money ($30-ish). If you aren't worried about material, concealment, or showing off a BBQ gun, I think this is a great option. I have one for my S&W 64 and it has been great. If you do want leather, Galco is my suggestion.
I have the same gun and use a leather Galco for hip carry or a cheap universal nylon shoulder rig when I mow, for the 13 stripe and muskrat vermin in my case. I don't remember which "frame" size S&W the shoulder was actually designed for, but it's just padded nylon and available pretty much anywhere.
I'm partial to Alien Gear, but I'm not sure what they have in the way of revolver holsters.
I'll second a leather Bianchi. They're good quality and support the weight well. I have one for my 5" 1911. Obviously a good belt should also be on the order list if you don't have one. Belt can make carrying a decent holster better.
From back when I used to hunt mice in Central Texas, I found that the most efficient rig was a Single Action Army (Ruger Blackhawk in 45ACP, actually) in a cowboy holster. Very fast on the target when the mouse would jump out as you walked across a field. Also didn't have to dispose of the bodies. Much more efficient than the AR15 at that range.
I find evidence of snakes in my yard, I think "cool!" and try to get my 5 and 3 year old to see them. Unless you're finding shed copperhead skins??
I'm probably going to go with the hunter
The shop I usually go to for this stuff is actually closed. I'd still like to actually try them out before putting money down, but now I have some places to look.
I don't berkeleying like snakes, period. Finding 6+ foot long skins in my new garage has me thinking I should switch to a 45-410, or cut down one of my 12 gauges instead, but the 357 hasn't let me down before.
Spammy revival of old thread (deleted) but since its at the top, it does make me wonder.
Has anyone heard from Dr. Hess? It feels like its been a long time...too long.
In reply to John Welsh :
I was wondering the same in one of the Lotus threads. I didn't always agree with him, but his views were something to think about.
I carried a Jack Ass shoulder holster for my back up weapon both on duty and off duty when I was a LEO. Excellent holster. Pricey. You get what you pay for.

Another vote for alien gear if they make one. I've also used a generic from rural king for a bit. Personally have only had bad luck with we the people holsters

Don't think we will. He was angry about the donation from GRM to the southern poverty law center. My guess is he took his toys and went home.
shame kinda. As I now travel to his part of the world a great deal. I probably owe him a beer of 12 after all the dust ups we used to get into.
