We have a bathroom with a composite bathtub/shower. The shower curtain is supposed to hang from one of those rails that extends to fill the length of the tub and then gets tightened in place. The current rail, which is maybe a year old, just fell down for the second time, conking my wife on the back of her head while she was bathing a granddaughter. Not cool.

So, two basic questions: 1, is there a better technology out there, and 2, where do I get it?

I'd have to be convinced before I drill holes in the one-piece composite tub surround. That said, the extend-and-tighten idea isn't exactly rocket surgery; I just want a unit that is closer to a Corolla than a Trabant.

We got the existing rail from BBandB (RIP). Even if I could go back for another one, I don't think I would.

What do we like for this stuff?

I hate those types of rails with a passion. I went as far as to print holders to mount to the wall then jb welded that to the tile. Now that I'm replacing the shower I'm getting the screw in kind.

Ok, I'll try to convince you.

There will never be a pressure for shower rod that works worth a crap, and they are all ridiculously over priced.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with gluing and screwing actual base plate to the shower surround. The only argument that could be made against it is that the holes "will leak".  If you are getting any quantity of water up that high, somebody needs to be retrained in how to take a shower.

Buy the screw-in kind. Use wall anchors.  If you really hate the idea, mount the rod in the wall above the surround. But it won't hold in Sheetrock better than in the fiberglass surround.

Y'all must be doing something different or gravity pulls harder where you are.  Wife and I have been rocking the same pressure style Ikea shower rod since 2015 with no issues.  It fell once when I tripped on the shower curtain and once in a blue moon it drifts down a little, just push it back up till its level and get back to washing your butt.

Is your surround just a multi piece of flat vinyl that glues to the drywall and not a tub/shower/surround one or more piece combo? Those expand and twist to tighten shower rods are only good of they are sitting on a surround ledge like on a one piece tub/shower. I would also get the screw in shower rod and use 1/4" drive in plastic anchors pounded into the drywall. After drilling the holes, I would squirt in some wood glue into the hole before hammering in the anchors to strengthen the drywall. Pictures?

I have a second twist to tighten shower rod sitting on top of the screw-in rod so that we can hang towels over the top rod for extra guests or to dry things while still being able to use the shower curtain.
