How are you supposed to wear that backwards?

(I've never worn a hardhat so I don't know if this is sarcasm)

Is that a thing?

Yeah, it's pretty common. I watched this in the steel mill

I think usually you turn the internal frame the opposite way. Frame sits forward and shell sits backwards.

Pretty sure ShawnG was being sarcastic.

People do it all the time. It's completely against OSHA guidelines. Reversing a helmet, or wearing a baseball cap under it, or modifying the suspension are all completely not ok.

How is that to wear all day?

It looks heavy but also light at the same time.

It weighs about 15.8 oz compared to the current units which are about 13.8 oz.

But it fits better, has a chin strap, and doesn't bobble around as much, which makes it more comfortable.

My old helmet sits 2 1/4" above my head. And yes, I just clipped my helmet on the top of my trailer door opening and whiplashed my neck. berkeley. That hurts (and happens many times per week)

The new style sits 1 5/8" above my head, and gives better peripheral vision. I almost never whiplash my neck.

So yes, it's more comfortable.

I thought we were talking about drinking on the job...

It's not uncommon around here, especially in the smaller shops to have a beer at lunch, or a couple at the end of the day. The Millwrighting contractor my Son worked for always kept a keg in the fridge for the end of the day, and the automotive machine shop I deal with always has a fridge full of beer.

I work in a bigger plant so you don't see any drinking but I'd bet that on any given day at least half the plant has a pretty good buzz going. A lot of people make their own edibles now which makes it a lot easier and less conspicuous to consume.

Funny hard hat story, when I was 14 or 15 I worked in a lumber yard. We wore  hard hats and work boots which were both heavy, and me with my big feet, and only weighing about 90 lbs at the time, once I got going with those heavy boots and heavy hard hat, I resembled some kind of perpetual motion machine and everybody made fun of the way I walked.  And every one of the old Portuguese guys at the yard would pull a bottle of beer, usually wrapped in tin foil for some reason,  out of their lunch boxes at lunchtime

I was being sarcastic.

Hardhat on backwards seems like a good indicator of how much you value your head.

In reply to Peabody :

I bet those guys were also perfectly capable of having just one beer for lunch because they knew they were at work.

We can only go as fast as our slowest person.

I can handle a beer at lunch but Carl would probably have three or four and wreck it for everyone. Thanks Carl!

I work in a large industrial park and there's a Speedway gas station and on Friday's there are a lot of guys buying 2-3 hot dogs or pizza slices along with 2 - 1/2 quart cans of beer.

A lot of guys.....

We worked a few jobs that we had to wear hard hats because of aboom pump. The general told me that it was because they were worried about the entire boom falling on us, not other things.....only the whole hydraulic boom failing and landing on one guy.

There is no helmet in the world that will withstand a multi ton boom falling from dozens of feet  on top of you.

I also hate wearing hard hats and do it as little as possible, I might look into the new generation so I have one if I need it

But with the new generation, are you going to be able to get cowboy style ones?  Think of the fashion!

I'd rather see new generation hard hats with integrated camelbacks so we can drink on the job! cheeky

Fashion is apparently important in hard hats.

I'm holding out for the 3 foot wide sombrero model myself, or perhaps some sort of pirate tricorn hat

When I was 17 and 18, I did landscaping work over the summers with a group of roughneck older guys.  On the ride back to the shop on Fridays the owner would grab a couple of cases of Busch.  The 6 or 7 of us would sit around and drink a bunch of them.  We were lucky no problems ever arose, but it was obviously not the responsible thing to do.

When I was 14 my part time/weekend job was doing insulation, and we did it all through summer. Almost every house we did offered us beer afterward. I was all of about 85 lbs and got drunk on 2 beers. I was usually plastered all day Saturday, crawling through peoples attics
