Just how insane would one have to be in order to feel that buying a 2014 Audi A6 with the 3.0 TDI was a good idea?

I have a 2014 Touareg TDI. Pretty much the same drivetrain. It's less than reliable but the torque makes up for it. Call it a love-hate relationship.

Mine has the Malone 2.0 tune and has hit a pothole that caused some of the complicated parts to fall off and be replaced with other, less complicated parts.

We are currently in the hate stage of our relationship, as it has some obscure sensor that has failed, sending it into limp mode again.

As an add, timing chain rattle is a thing and it's a fairly expensive thing as the engine has to come out.

Valley leaks are also a thing. That can also get fairly expensive depending on if the front cover has to come off the engine.

It has the infamous CP4 injector pump that can grenade and send shrapnel throughout the fuel system. Also a fairly expensive repair. Not a common problem, but it can happen.

I'd say do it, but go into it eyes wide open.

Sounds like it's not too insane of an idea.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

Yeah, I had heard that the timing chain tensioners were an issue.  Is there an interval, or just when they get noisy?  Fuel pump shrapnel sounds hideous.

How many miles on yours?

125k.

The timing chain issue doesn't really have an interval and is probably due to not changing the oil regularly.

CP4 pump, eh?

IIRC, those were designed in Germany to run on German diesel that has more lubricity than US diesel. My Duramax used the same pump. It is a common preventative plan to install a lift pump to supply a couple psi  to the pump at all times to reduce the load on the factory system; I'm not sure if that's relevant to your application. It's also common to run fuel system lubricant; I did this at every fill-up with Hot Shot diesel additive.

Same pump. The pumps in the VWs have fewer incidents of failure than the trucks, and Europe has even fewer incidents yet. I run Stanadyne's Lubricity Formula and change the fuel filter every oil change. Probably overkill but it may help and is fairly cheap.

That said, the pump is a piss poor design.

There is a company that makes a metering valve bypass kit for the TDI that solves most of the pump issues. The pump may still fail but instead of dumping the shrapnel into the fuel system, it dumps into a filter to catch the crap before the contamination spreads throughout the rest of the system. Whitebread Bypass Kit

Darkside Devlopment also makes a kit to install the CP3 pump in place of the CP4. It doesn't work on all 3.0 engines though. Only the CATA engines. CP3-fuel-pump-conversion-kit-for-3-0-tdi
