My wife has never been interested in Star Wars, but with my enthusiasm with the upcoming movie, she has spiked curiosity in seeing the others.
So my question is, do you think I should bother showing her the newer three movies or just the original three?
I'm kind leaning towards just the original three. I feel like the newer ones just are long and besides learning how Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader, it's just cgi and controversial fanboy content.
So what say ye?
Yeah 4-5-6 is fine. If you start with the prequels she won't want to see the rest

Yeah, pretty much. You can probably explain the prequels to her in like 3 minutes.
Agreed with the 4/5/6 only approach. If at all possible, get the original versions, not the later CGI-enhanced ones. The originals were released on DVD a few years ago, but I don't know if they're still readily available.
I used to be a big time fan, can't say I'm all that excited for the new installments.
Between how 1-3 turned out and the dumping of the book-based timeline... meh.
Don't get me wrong, I'll see the new ones opening weekend.
But yeah, 4 - 5 - 6, ideally pre edit versions.
I always wondered how one's perception of these movies would change if they started at Episode 1. For many of us, that cannot happen, as we grew up with 4,5,and 6. But, yeah, machete order. Watch 4 and 5, so you get Luke, Han, and wonder what happened with Vader. Then 2 and 3 to find out how he went bad, and finally, 6 to see his redemption.
Also, explain that Han shoots first.
Hmm I didn't think about Machete order. I still think it's too much. The first 3 episodes just don't have the feeling of the original 3.
Either Machete or 4-6.
As far as what version of 4-6... What do you have? I find Empire is the only one that was better for the '97 version. Don't get me started on what they did to the ending of Jedi in '04.
Yub nub!
For those who aren't sure just how badly Lucas and Co. screwed up the originals with their overzealous editing, this (and the others in the series) will lay it out scene by scene, and (depending on your level of fandom) possibly make you want to hurl.

I saw the CGI enhanced Return of the Jedi recently and just kept thinking "why, why in the berkeley would they do this".

If you are looking for original copies, there was an official release in '06. The "Theatrical" version in on the bonus disk. Those are full '77, '80, '83 cuts, no remaster. It is a little grainy by modern standards, but worth it. My only complaint is that on my TV it is Letter box on all 4 sides. maybe 37" viewable on a 47" TV. Not sure how it is to find it today.
After that there is the fan made Blue Ray, although I don't have any further input on that version.
Or any pre '97 VHS. My copy growing up was the '87 10th anniversary edition. But even by then there had been changes made in New Hope, Han/Greedo shooting, the storm trooper hitting his head when entering the control room, ect. I think there was a mid 90's edition before '97 that was remastered some, but not butchered.
Lastly on this topic, there had been hopes with the Disney buy out, the mouse would want our money for a clean BR release of the original copies, but that has yet to happen. My last bit of hope for that would be a release right before EP. VII.
I look forward to hearing Morbid chime in on this subject, even if she is a Fett fan-girl
I could see 4,5,6 and leaving it at that, or adding 1,2,3 afterwards. If you watch them 4,5,6,1,2,3 then it is the story of Luke Skywalker. I prefer to watch them 1,2,3,4,5,6, which makes it the story of Anakin Skywalker.
Watch Spaceballs and call it a day. I'd leave my wife before I sat through any of the Star Wars movies.
I've tried to get my brother to watch all six episodes with me--like spend the whole day on the couch. One day.
I know many people dislike episodes 1 2 & 3. I agree that they aren't as good as 4 and 5, but they are about on par with episode 6 (Return of the Jedi). But, overall, I Don't think they are bad, and are worth viewing.
George Lucas decided he wanted sacchariny cuteness mixed in (Ewoks, Jarjar Binks, clumsy droids and exceptionally guileless young Anikin), and that's just the way it is. If you want pure undiluted space sci-fi drama and violence you need to look somewhere else. Maybe he had a Chrystal ball back in the early eighties that told him that path would lead him to a Disney buyout when he was ready to retire?
My biggest gripe with the prequels is Christian Hadenson's awful acting in episodes 2 & 3. If you can't give a good performance standing on the stage next to Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Ian McDiarmid and Samuel L Jackson, there is no hope for you. His performance is all the proof you should need to know that the force isn't real.

LOL'd
Before trashing on the prequels too much (and ep 1 and I are not friends) you kind of have to consider who the director was. Lucas is a E36 M3 director and was working with a very young and inexperienced cast therefore got very wooden performances from the majority of the actors.
Unless you're going to get into the in-depth 'there's more to the story and it goes something like this' discussion with Kate, machete order is the way to go. It covers all of the 'need to know' information and should set her up well to follow ep 7 since the movies and comics are the only 'canon' at this point.
Have her watch em all. All have equally bad and cheesy acting. You either love Star Wars or you dont. Aint no specific order gonna influence your interest.
If you didn't see Star Wars the first 2 weeks it was in the theater in 77, you've never seen the original. Lucas had Williams re-edit some of the score. He's been re-editing them...well, forever.
watch 4,5,6.. then go back and watch these youtube videos to sum up 1,2,and 3:
Episode 1: Jedi Party
Episode 2: The Friend Zone
Episode 3: Revenge of Middle Management
edit: actually, no... watch the Youtube videos first, then 4,5,6....
then if you are feeling adventurous, watch Episode 4: Laser Moon Awakens
Watch 4,5, and 6, then watch Mr. Plinket's reviews of 1, 2, and 3 on red letter media (youtube).
