How is 4th place even alive to collect. If someone shoots my dog even with a pellet gun, they're getting my .50 back at them.

If you're wondering WHY McDonalds insisted on keeping the coffee so hot, it is because of wasted product.
You make coffee, it starts cooling. If it cools below a certain temp, you can no longer serve it and you must throw it out.
Therefore, start it hotter and it has a longer shelf life, which means more likelihood of getting sold and less of being thrown out. So if you make it at 200deg you throw out x% but if you make it colder at 180 you throw out x+something%.
So, McD had done the math that a few burn lawsuits here and there were LESS EXPENSIVE than throwing out the DIFFERENCE (the something in x+something) in coffee. I don't care who you are but this is mind boggling to me. Large corporations deal in numbers that just are outside of my little brain's comprehension circle.
There's also probably an aspect of McD corporate vs franchises. I bet that corporate handles lawsuits as one of the services it provides to franchisees. So it's just another layer of separation between the person at the point of sale and the person making the decision, which leads to making whats seems like a ridiculous decision to the person who is at the point of sale.
