Apparently, the Catholic church now approves of the Blues Brothers. Yes. Uhh... did they even watch the film? Yes there is the mission from God and attempted redemption, but they do every bad thing short of murder.

Remember...Jake & Elwood put the band back together to save the Catholic-run orphanage that they'd grown up in (insert Cook County Tax Acessor's office scene here).
I'm no fan of Catholocism (or of any organized religion, for that matter), but ya gotta tell the truth when it's out there...
My point was that despite their noble intentions, they do everything the "wrong" way. They get Matt "guitar" Murphy to essentially leave his wife. They lie to the band, repeatedly. They almost kill people (Illinois Nazis, but still, sorta people.) Destroy multitudes of things along they way. I don't think the church condones these things.
And I am in no way bashing this movie. It is my all time favorite. I can quantify that.
What if they turned the pope mobile into a drifto machine, then the young "in " crowd might join the club .Yo

Did you miss the Crucades in school, it was a lot of bad things to achive a greater good.
Now to be an ass and ruin the movie for someone, if church properties are tax exempt why were they losing the property to the tax man.

Simple:
The Church was in Cook County, IL. The Penguin must have missed a bribe somewhere.
And it's dark out and we're wearing sunglasses.
Other Pope references in recent pop culture...

I watched it "again" a couple of weeks ago.
I am surprised the Catholic Church would promote the movie due to the amount of "F" bombs dropped. Shoot, back in the day Rob and Laura Petry had to sleep in seperate beds.
The Band!
Do you see the light???
The Band!
Do you see the light???

YES! YES! JESUS H. TAPDANCING CHRIST--I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!!!!
[Elwood Blues Jake Blues has a fight over the police car Elwood Blues got after he traded away the original bluesmobile for a microphone]
Elwood: You don't like it?
Jake: No I don't like it...
[Elwood Blues floors the pedal and jumps over an open drawbridge]
Jake: Car's got a lot of pickup.
Elwood: It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?
[a brief thinking pause while Jake attempts to light a cigarette]
Jake: Fix the cigarette lighter.
oh lord.
I named my first son Jake (Jacob) But my wife flatly refused to name our second son Elwood, not even a middle name.
We settled on the name she picked, Parker. (she swears up and down that it is not from "Parker Lewis Can't lose")
Have you guys seen the extended/director's cut? It shows Elwood quitting his job at the glue factory, hence why he had some in his briefcase.

And the gas station blows up!
It kind of disappoints me that there's a reason why Elwood has glue in his suitcase. I like to think he's the kind of guy who carries it around. You know, just in case you need some glue.
