Thats the old wheel in the pic above here is the new one old one on the left new one on the right. The tub is a '70's model Ralt chassis that two people died in so I guess it was time to retire it.Also the rig is not mine but I did help build it.

Obviously no cup holder. When you crash, your beer will go everywhere.

In reply to 4cylndrfury: It stays pretty still on the hard wood floor. I havent tested it while playing yet. I dont think it will move at all though.

In reply to Graefin10: I don't, I dont have a PS3 yet. Or high speed internet for that matter. I did however build the cockpit without the wheel controller permanently mounted on purpose. So I could put a different wheel on there. Ill probably get another DFP at some point.

In reply to grinch77: Now THAT is a racing cockpit!

Ok price breakdown of the one I built

(3) 2'x4' sheets of 1/2" MDF - $26

(2) 2"x3"x8' studs - $4

(4) 2-1/2" industrial casters - $24

Hardware to mount casters - $13

Screws to assemble - $0 (already had)

Seat - $0 (already had)

Around $70 after tax I suppose. Its possible I could have only used (2) sheets of MDF if I had simplified things a little but I am very happy with the end result. Only thing I might do is take off the casters and add another set of washers all around to give it a little more ground clearance.

bump for build forum status. perhaps?

cockpit may be getting revised in a few weeks, if necessary, MS wheel to be replaced with the most budget friendly version of the Fanatec CSR + shifter.

Dude, you guys are hardcore!

I just made mine out of PVC/plywood and an old Panoz racing seat.

The making it into a bench seat when not in use is berkeleying brilliant!

I'm going to have to make a very compact one soon. I have to be able to move it from in front of the computer easily and have it take up very little space. It will have to use my office-style chair instead of a dedicated chair. I'm thinking some kind of stand for the pedals and wheel with an arm for the shifter and handbrake controller (which can fold out of the way somehow) with a rope that loops around the base of the lowered wheelie chair to keep it from moving away from the pedals (the big problem I have now using a plastic table, over time the pedals and seat slide apart). It should also have a buit-in 12v fan or two because it's bloody hot around here and not sitting still makes it worse.

That's the right idea but it has to be even smaller and home-made. Also my monitor will sit on it right in front of the steering wheel.

Remember, PVC is cheap and light.

there are some pretty crazy build thread here: http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=163

Check this one out. Not compact or temporary. But simple and looks good. http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=241533

Back from the dead. It has been a few years but my good old racing cockpit has more or less stayed the same. Its still unpainted.

However its time for some changes and upgrades.

I sold the MPV earlier this year and as such my seat went with it. I weighed my options and decided to go with an ebay seat as a replacement.

So my $70 sim rig just became a $178 sim rig.

Some other pending revisions include:
- Mount and wire the sequential shifter as a handbrake, with beer tap handle
- Possible adjustments to angle/height of steering wheel mount
- Add a cupholder since I lost the sweet sweet MPV seat.
- Keyboard/Mouse trays - Paint the darn thing or something. Make it look nicer. I have many gallons of spare/scrap interior house paint at this point....hmm....
