TIL that Newark was supposed to become a sister city to the Hindu nation of Kailasa. Which, first of all, becoming a sister city to an entire nation conceptually makes no sense. But even funnier is that, after the big announcement, it turns out that there is no nation of Kailasa. It's fake, somebody made it up, and nobody ever did, ya know, a Google search to make sure it was real.

I have childhood recollections of one of these passing through Fiji in the late 50's when I was about 8 or 9. The plane was big deal and we weren’t allowed up close but dad was in charge of the meteorological office and the pilot ended up having a meal at our place. I recall being shown a snapshot taken at altitude and you could see the curve of the earth. The other memory was that they used the cross runway for departure and the "fallout" wheels in the wingtips ended up in the mangrove swamp and were never found …

my Dad was a child of the Great Depression, then a US Marine in the Pacific in WW2. while those U2 events are before i was born, i remember my Dad talking about Gary Powers being a coward and putting our nation at risk for not taking his suicide pill.
