In reply to Peabody :
When I was in 6th grade, I was told that we needed to define our projected careers so that we could tailor our junior high and high school classes to our direction in college to achieve that career.
In 6th grade, I could see far enough ahead to make a cool fort or fix my bike...
That's just dumb, though by that time I already knew...
There are two age groups in our shop. Under 30 and over 60, and nothing in between.

In 6th grade I had to do the same thing except it was in front of a video camera. I really didn't want to sit in front of a camera and I didn't give a E36M3 about a future job.
But TIL that Dollar Shave Club has pearl white shaving cream. I assume that it is to make it look pretty. Really? They need to put tiny bits of plastic in it for me to get a clean shave? I am hoping you can make out the pearlyness of it. >:0P

TIL that a ladder style that I've used almost everyday for the last 23 years has its top rest 16 inches on center.
In my defense of not being a DA, I've never used it for framing.

TIL that the Comfort Inn that I always stayed at when I was in Reading, PA has apparently permanently closed.
TIL my toothbrush has a vibrator! Pulled a new pack out of a drawer, use the old one in the parts cleaner; but I tapped it on the counter to shake water and BZZZZZZ.
Hmm. 1,001 uses.

About 20 years ago, a paramedic co-worker and I had a very serious bunch of conversations about starting a cleaning business that specializes in crime scenes and places where very messy natural deaths had occurred.
Our thought process was that we have already been walking through these houses anyway and we were used to the horror of it, so we might as well make some money off of it, since people would likely pay anything to just make it all go away.
My dad and I cleaned up after his uncle was stabbed. Had he known that was an option he would have happily paid someone else. People hold a lot more blood than I had realized.

Wasn't there a book or movie with that as a premise?

I know it is a narrow profession that can stay surprisingly busy, and a lot of those businesses start the same way.

This is for Pete as well. The public education system I experienced, concluding in 1970, had a "guidance" system in place that vigorously promoted "clean careers" to everyone. "don't get your hands dirty" was a mantra. This has not changed in the half century since, and I suspect is also the mantra in the private education systems. The then available pretty good hands on tech classes and school were promoted to the unintelligent exclusively. The actual shop classes have deteriorated into oblivion since due mostly to liability. The result is what we see, and it keeps me busy!$. Terrible to project out time wise. Construction statistics may be scewed by the under reporting of young aliens, but there is the only solution in the near term. Open the borders.
I had wanted to learn a trade, I always enjoyed working with my hands, and in spite of allegedly being bright and testing well I was a terrible student. My guidance counselor sold my parents on my trying college, and studying mechanical engineering because that's like being a mechanic but cleaner. I was too smart for manual labor and just choosing not to work to my potential, and college would somehow fix that. I somehow got accepted and after three dismal semesters was told by my advisor that I was essentially wasting my time and money as I was an awful math student and should explore other options.

If there is thankfully I missed it. It was a really bad scene.

Cleaner starring Samuel L Jackson and Ed Harris

I only escaped the college try out part because my folks didn't have the $$ to pay my tuition, and if I was going to work, I was going to spend it on racing. I still think it was the right choice too.

What a cool concept. Use the same batteries as your cordless mower.

Because he couldn't stomach the people who would say,"Ooh, Michaels a fox", and there was already a Michael Fox in the actors union, if my long term memory serves
TIL that European 184mm competition clutches are the same flywheel dimensions as domestic 7.25" competition clutches. 200.x mm bolt circle, .100" step from clutch basket mounting surface to friction surface.
I can put together a 7.25" clutch/flywheel combo for an S60R cheaper than a stock dual mass flywheel and clutch. This is partly due to OMGWTF Volvo pricing, but still.
Also TIL that you can buy 153 tooth flywheels for LS engines that take a 7.25" clutch. This is important if you need to use a 153 tooth flywheel for reasons.
Lots of interesting TILs here.
TIL about the 1949 Bat Mobile. Of course you remember the series that played in movie theaters every Saturday! 1/2 hour movie that leaves you hanging so you have to come back next week. Batman was goofy, Robin was worse, but the Bat Mobile was a Mercury ragtop.
Side story:
My Dad, born in 1932 would go to the movies on Saturday; after the MGM Lion would do its roar, all the kids would roar back at it.
His parents once brought im to a "grownup" movie once, the lion did his thing, there's little Bobby, the only person in the house roaring back at the screen.
BTW, the next Batmobile was a 1939 Cadillac that showed up in 1943.
