He was still enjoying doing gigs a couple years ago.

Gotta say, 96 is a pretty good run. "Legend" seems an appropriate word. RIP.
Having lost a loved one who was suffering with dementia, it was always extremely heartening to see the relationship Bennett had with Lady Gaga in his final years. I was always left with the impression that she was a huge force in making his final years better than they otherwise might have been, preserving his legacy, and just being a general force for good in his orbit.
