First, expect that the weather will be overcast, fogy and damp until 1PM on the coast. Then when it burns off it turns warm. The more inland you go it will get hot.
The traffic will get your attention. Do you have a fast pass for the toll roads? Three of you in a car will help.
The activities are; Car centered, Tourist and family. The amount of time you can avoid the Hwy 405 the better.
I live 90 miles east of Los Angeles in the mountains, we had nine feet of snow this year and thankfully it is all melted. We don't measure things in distance, it's time and more importantly time of day. If your son was ever into dinosaurs, the La Brea Tar pits exhibit is amazing. The Peterson is in the same neck of the city.
