We all know what box flares do for tub cars.

So what does the same trick for open-wheelers?
Big, tall, snorkeley intake airboxes!

(most of the rest of that race is on youtube, just keep pressing "part 2", "part 3" etc.)
I would have said "wings."
I've always thought that Formula cars were just about perfect when they looked like this:
Manly men who raced with brawn, not computers.
im with woody. Just needs to be a torpedo with a driver in place of the warhead.

FTW!! You've got to love the P34. Great idea. Staniforth says that the tires overheating was part of the problem that car had....I wonder if the same concept would be more effective in a modern car with better rubber compounds.
Power to weight ratio?
Being able to wheelie out of a turn (and these appear to be budget class cars)?

I wonder if they had trouble with the wheel bearings as well.

From memory, bearings were never a problem. Goodyear wouldn't continue development on the tires either.
Oh, and there was that whole getting banned by rule changes thing, too.

"One or two [race car designs] inspired that most unnattractive of human reactions - 'It's going to win - let's get it banned'; with instant resort to the relevant small print rather than to the drawing board to compete" - Alan Staniforth, Race and Rally Car Sourcebook
having the notion of your rear end sharing a container shaped like a small bomb with an engine that's absolutely screaming, knowing that any touch of the walls or another car is going to catapult you into the air or rip suspension bits off, I think that's what makes open wheel so cool for me

I'd always heard from my oval racing buds that Dirt Modifieds cost money.
OTOH, I'd also heard that Dirt Modified races actually pay money...

Granatelli's STP turbine car comes to mind.

That's how racing should be... all skill, hp, and rubber... none of this fancy aerodynamics stuff

I don't think they're dirt mods.
I think they're either IMCA modifieds, or all-pro mods, both claimer classes.
