I only realized today that I do, in fact, care who the next pope is.

I would like him to be a land tortoise, lobster, or giant sequoia if possible, so that I won't have to suffer through another round of pope-related news in my lifetime.

I was hoping for a much younger Pope, someone in their 50's or early 60's. On the other hand, I am excited for a non-European.

The thing about Popes, tho, is that even if someone thinks they know the guy and believes he will lead in a certain way....they always seem to get it wrong.

As a Catholic, I was surprised to learn recently, that ANY male Catholic can be "appointed" as the Pope. You don't need to be a Cardinal, bishop, or even a priest, in theory you could be a brother or even a lay person, but the Cardinals are way to conservative to vote for someone who is not at least a Monsignor.

Me too, I want someone with some decades left in 'em, at 76 if he hasn't been watching his health I could have to sit through non-stop coverage of a camera pointed at a smoke stack at lunch again pretty soon.

What I remember from 2005 when he was a front runner as well, he lived in an apartment rather than the Cardinal's mansion, walked or drove or took a taxi rather than take the limo, and cooked his own meals. I'd imagine that based upon that lifestyle he is pretty healthy, but the age is just annoying to me. My uneducated guess is he has 10 good years at best, and this job is among the most stressful in the world.

With all of the troubles the church is facing it would have been nice to see a younger Pope. Someone with the energy to really change the culture of the papacy. Maybe someone who would spend the church's money on helping the poor and needy, as opposed to celebrating the church itself. Someone with the courage and vitality to really take on the established leaders who have contributed to the epidemic of pedophilia. The Catholic church is in need of someone who can restore trust and faith. It's a tall order for any man.....especially an old man.
