It's working this morning. I did notice last night, the site would puke once in a while and show nothing but an error message.

I spent a couple of hours last night looking through this. I wish more had captions. The German perspective has rarely been seen.

Must be in occupied Berlin. Those are Russian soldiers driving and the Brandenburg Gate behind them. Interesting piece of trivia-- you can see the figure on top of the gate has been badly damaged. It is a chariot with winged horses representing Victory. Napoleon once seized the statue and took it back to Paris, though a few years later it was returned to Berlin.

The Brandenburg Gate was part of the Soviet sector of Berlin, though at its western border. The Soviets weren't interested in rebuilding much of East Berlin, so the figure on top of the gate was left derelict for a number of years. Finally, West Berlin offered to restore it and it was taken down and given to them (not sure who "them" was, but may have been the City or private citizens). Once restored, the statue was returned to East Berlin.

The Gate was at the end of a long, wide boulevard that originally went from the west to the east and ended at the Gate. The statue originally faced west, down the boulevard. When the East Germans got the statue back they put it on backwards, facing the east. After reunification, it was turned around again to face the west.

I've only managed to make the site work once for me. Perhaps with all the pics it is just crashing with demand.

Wouldn't work for me either. I'll keep trying. So far this one:

It's throwing a error message at the moment. Maybe we are overloading the server.
