Long story short: man buys old Iraqi war tank, finds $2.5 million in gold bars in the gas tank.

Pretty sure if I found gold bars in the gas tank of an Iraqi tank, I wouldn't be hot on telling the world.

I'd probably take 10 million of the 12.5 and cash it out discreetly. Then I might call a news reporter with the remaining 2.5 million for the fame. Might even volunteer to try to "return" the 2.5 million so I don't have really angry bad guys coming after me for their gold bars.

I've always wanted a tank. The gold would be a nice bonus!

That might cover the cost of the tank, restoration, and a bit of run time?

So it takes $2.5 mil to fill the tank on a tank?

Imagine how much gold/cash we blew up during the war or is sitting abandon in the middle of the desert.

I wonder how many other iraqi tanks were so equipped and how much gold ended up liquified.

edit* Neal beat me to it while I ate my lunch

So, if you buy a tank and don't find millions in gold, the worst thing that happens is you still have a bad ass tank. I don't see the down side here.

I need one of those, (the tank not the gold) for when the purge comes. If I see any other tanks I won't shoot out of courtesy assuming that one of you guys got the idea from me and are a GRMer

Don't you think someone is going to come knocking on the door looking for their gold?

See my first post.

Happening upon a gold bar may seem like a great thing at first, but I think there may be quite a few "unintended consequences" including both legit and very not-legit people knocking on your door.

Kinda like winning $2.5 million at a shady casino in Russia.

Let them show up knocking at the door, he has a frigging tank.

I sure as hell would not habe gone public with that. Sell it off an oz at a time or so until it's gone.

Exactly. I'm guessing these are the guys that would run right to the police if they stumbled onto a little extra coke too. Just sell a bit at a time until it's gone and no one gets hurt.

Yeah... because gold bars are really easy to convert into cash without anyone noticing...

Me thinks you would need underworld connections to do such a thing and I'm not sure that would be worth getting involved with for any amount of money.

Master P isn't a bad guy. Though I'd be outraged that the tank was sold as a former Iraqi tank when it's clearly a former No Limit tank.

I think some Iraqi soldiers must have seen Kelly's Heroes.

I find it strange that Britain restricts handguns and rifles so much, but lets people buy tanks.

The gun has to be inoperable, just like the civilian owned tanks here. Essentially it becomes a cool looking bulldozer.

Easy, just put a GRM sticker on your tank.

Here's one thing to note- did anyone see any markings on that gold?

I didn't.

Which would say that the acquisition of the gold wasn't exactly legal, as it was melted down from it's original form into those bars. Could have been jewelry, other gold bars, coins, or something else. But it was not intended to be tracked on where it came from.

Shave a few ounces off at a time, make the rounds at local "cash for gold" places. Make sure you interject "I NO WUT I HAV!" into every conversation with store personnel.
