Yup.

I've got two of those on the shelf at work and the castings are smoother than that photo looks.

I would expect that you are seeing the surface finish from simpler casting methods.

Even if it wasn't the paint, I've got cast parts from decades before then that are much cleaner than those pics.

Oh, absolutely there are some sweet old cast parts, but not all of them, and no different today.
