I am a little out of touch with the current market but I am looking for the "Great All-Around Motorcycle". Fast, agile, good for carving corners but can do 800 miles in a day without murdering a 40+ yr olds' achy bones.
The last bike I owned that fit that description was a '96 VFR-750R with a tank bag and Corbin seat.
So - am I shopping for a well kept 90s VFR or...? A few of the BMWs look to fit the bill too but they don't appear for sale around here much to go try one on.
I was cross shopping these a few months ago and ended up with a 2005 BMW k1200s. Flew to TX and rode it back to TN in the same day. The vfr is a great bike, but I'm glad I went with the k1200. The additional power alone was worth it for me.
BTW I prefer the 01 up VFRs and the 05 up K bikes...... it's hard to go wrong with either bike. Here is my old thread:

Another VFR is the first thing that came to mind; a Suzuki V-Strom is also a pretty good blend of sporty and comfortable. Kawasaki's new Versys is another attempt at an all-around bike, and the Ninja 650 is also a fairly comfortable sport bike. My current dream bike, a Buell Ulysses, might also work if you're very tall.
What is the parts/support like for a used Buell in the post-HD world? Can I still get everything I need to keep it on the road?

I'd go for a VFR800. The Concours 1400 is pretty good. A Honda Blackbird would also be really good.
Having ridden a VFR800 and owned a VFR750 in the past, I'd go look for another 750, but that's because the ergonomics on the 800 didn't work that well for me.
I'd also look at BMW K1100RSs and K1200RSs, but then again I like BMW bikes.
The only replacement for a VFR, is another VFR.
