$2000 Challenge: Meet the 2024 parking lot build

What’s more challenging than building a competitive race car for just $2000? How about building a race car for less than $2000 in the parking lot the day before the event?

That’s the whole idea behind the parking lot build at our official hotel, an unofficial challenge within the challenge that has become a mainstay of our Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge presented by Tire Rack.

For 2024, the parking lot build is a 1987 Mazda RX-7 that has previously competed in the $2000 Challenge, though it still has plenty of work that needs to be completed, as forum user dyintorace explains: "Before it shows up to the hotel, we would get the engine bolted in the car. I would also get the tires ordered and on the wheels."

That would leave the following main systems in need of completion:

  1. Engine harness connected and car wired (ECU needs VATS taken out)
  2. Exhaust figured out (I'm looking for F-body exhaust manifolds to install in lieu of the truck versions)
  3. Driveshaft connected to the 4L60E
  4. Shifter cable and shift lever
  5. Existing fuel lines connected
  6. Fuel cell & lines boxed off from passenger compartment

Whether or not this RX-7 is ready to compete in time, the results are bound to be spectacular.

I know I work here and all, but the $2000 Challenge is one of my favorite events on the calendar.

I really love the creativity you all bring, and I'm excited to see what wild builds show up this year.

And we're making progress on the car between now and then. Knocked out several to-do items this past weekend. We'll be working on it at night for the next 2 weeks as well as one last big push next weekend before I drag it to the hotel!

I keep thinking that I should come down early and help out somehow, then I remember I am a crap mechanic and slow as a bonus...

Looks brilliant so far, lots of luck!
