My Spec E30 was the best driving car I've ever owned. So easy to drive at the ragged edge of traction, sounded great, perfectly adequate stock brakes and cheap parts. Almost a shame they've become collectible.
If the goal of your race car is to be highly nimble while remaining versatile for any event, then Chris and Alek Paterson’s 1991 BMW 325i might be the car to take notes from.
Currently set up to run in HPDE, Spec E30 and NASA’s Team Racing Endurance Challenge, the 325i retains a stock M20 engine–good for 160 horsepower and 160 lb.-ft. of torque–though is described as both “very tunable” and “very ‘flickable.’”
Think your track car is faster? Come prove it at the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge October 12-15 at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
What is the Ultimate Track Car Challenge? It’s our annual no-holds-barred track competition that simply seeks the fastest machines on four wheels. The rules are brief: Car and driver must just pass a safety inspection. Period.
Pretty much everyone is welcome: New, old, factory-bought and home-built. Wings are cool. So are box flares, giant intercoolers and sequential shifters.

The Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge is presented by Tire Rack, in association with Wilwood Engineering, HP Tuners, SPA Technique, Deatschwerks, CRC Industries and Volkswagen, with trophies from Track Advantage, Stifflers, BimmerWorld, HGSI, XS Batteries and Hoosier Tire.
