Grassroots Motorsports: The Work From Home Edition

Despite the worldly affairs, the GRM crew continues to chug on. There’s content to generate, cars to build and, yes, a business to be run.

Note that most of us on staff are telecommuting. If you need us, best to reach out via our contact page.

Some of us on staff already work at home, either full-time or a few days per week, so things aren’t too discombobulated. And as today’s virtual office meeting showed, we’re all dressed, too. There were just a few more cats present than usual.

We will continue to ship merchandise orders, too. If you order it, we’ll ship it.

Thanks, everyone, for the support and message board chatter.

To quote the great General Solo: “We’re all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?”

Oh yeah, and wash yo hands.

Our office has gone to an A/B rotation.  Half the employees are on team A, half on team B.  Team A is in the office this week, Team B next week.  Social distancing at its' finest...I guess.  My role doesn't qualify to be on either of the teams, so I'm keeping my normal schedule.  Normally I work in the office two days a week and at home three, so I'm fine with it.  One nice thing about this is the traffic, or lack thereof.  Atlanta traffic is now non-existant.  I'll make my 60 mile commute home this afternoon in an hour.  Normally it's 1hr 20min or even more.

I still have to go into the office for now.  Fortunately I have minimal contact with the public in my current assignment, and there are only 9 of us working in a huge facility.

There are only three of us in the giant room you can see in the picture.

They said I can't work from home as a ski instructor. Who knew?! Sucks too because we had a dry winter and then 7+ feet of snow over the past weekend.

Time to make the shift from winter job to summer job. Gas prices should be low as should traffic. Hopefully I won't be on here asking for help on the journey. Also sad that the Land Cruiser museum in SLC is closed. That was going to be one of our stops.

I was going to say, I haven't had an office space in about 5 years now. The only difference now is I don't go meet the client all day. It's all phone calls and today a bike ride. Did 15 miles with one of my partners to stay healthy during the shut down.

The view out of the office is to the alley between the 2 condo buildings. Can't wait till the weather gets better to take calls off the patio. laugh

None of those desks has a typical dual or triple monitor setup.  What kind of monster uses their laptop screen as a second screen!?!?!?

I have two monitors plugged into my docking station at home to match my office setups, but for some reason one of them won't work.  I typically run three monitors - two plus the laptop.  Email on the laptop, with the design programs on the other two (or right now, one).

I might order one of those super-wide curved monitors.  That might be nice.

Oh boy, my current work setup would make you happy.

Three monitors. Two computers. My mouse and keyboard are linked with Mouse without Borders, which usually works. The main reason for the two computers is that my laptop, while having support for up to three display outputs, reallllllly doesn't like doing it. So it just powers one monitor.

At one point I had 4, but again, my laptop didn't appreciate it. I had to get an active USB-DP dongle which was just really terribly slow.

Also, it was hard to find good wallpapers.

I run a 35" Ultrawide at home (because games).  Its actually 95% as good as dual screens for office applications/cad with 50% of the clutter.  I used to have a dual screen setup.  Then a triple setup where the center was an ultrawide.  Then I found that I pretty much only used the center screen for home stuff.

One of my frustrations with no KVM is when I am working from home, I want to plug my laptop in and utilize my desk setup without unplugging my mouse/kb/monitor(s).  Of course docking stations are completely non-standard now which is a whole different issue.

Yeah, at work I run a 35" ultra wide that's as good as two screens in addition to my laptop. At home I get by with my old work monitor.

I work from home, and what's pissing me off is that now that everyone is working from home, they are all treating it like some big hardship. They are enacting all kinds of new rules and we have extra meetings and video check ins...wtf?  That was never necessary before, you never went out of your way to accommodate or include the remote people before. Screw you, quit wasting my time and get to work.

Oh, the reason I have two keyboards is that I also run two computers, a PC and a MAC. Sometimes side-by-side, sometimes one or the other on both monitors.

To be fair, I had just set up my desk for WFH--Tim and I usually don't work at home at the same time, so we had shared a big desk and external monitor. I was just moving into this little drop-front (that I got for $38!). It's challenging trying to use a desk designed for a whole other time and working style, but I'm figuring it out. Here's where it's at today:

I typically go with LG for monitors.  I have this guy (oops guess its a 34 not a 35):  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R5R9VR9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm slightly regretting getting a 1080 monitor.  I'm a refresh rate/FPS over visual quality guy, but for office stuff 1440p or 4k would be useful.  I'm also finding it would be useful in certain sim games.

Sorry to not have a solid recommendation.  I will say if its coming out of your own pocket, its still probably easier to run dual 24" or 27" monitors.

I believe it is--came to me via Katie. Our office reminds me of growing up as one of 5 kids, where the hand-me-downs got recycled so much it was almost surprising when an original owner recalled wearing one. And slowride, I am also a stacker/piler. I'm starting to really warm up to pigeonholes. Same concept but more vertical, so you FEEL more organized than you are. Or look as organized as you always knew you were. Something like that.

I work remotely most of the week. Somehow this whole pandemic thing has now made it so that I have to actually go to the office on a daily basis. That seems backwards. And if today's any indication, we're pretty much back to full-speed--which, for us, is pretty darn quick. We have a great crew, and several of us usually work remotely in some capacity so this isn't a huge disruption. No matter where we are, our normal routine is a fast-moving mix of e-mail, chat, Dropbox, Monday, etc.

During normal times, Colin sits a few feet away from me--he's in the next office. Even so, we usually talk via chat. It's just easier, especially if we're discussing something on the site.

Even though we're now almost an hour drive apart, the conversation hasn't changed much since the bug-out:

Maple hardwood floors
Wood burning fireplace install
replace the rear patio roof with translucent PVC
work on fixing the little annoying things with my cars

  • water pump leak and clutch on the Fordzda Branger, along with a deep cleaning because I quit smoking and it smells like an ashtray
  • new seats and upholstery in the Branger
  • body panels on the Impala so maybe I can get more than $1000 when I sell it
  • horn relay on the LeMans so it will pass inspection

This whole thing actually came at a very opportune time.  I have an old DUI (oops, thought I was safe, but I was 0.015% over the limit, and SURPRISE - zero tolerance municipality) and I get to live out my 30-day license suspension while not having to commute.

I'm actually looking forward to this.  I get to focus on me.  Get back into jogging and weight training at home, fix up the house and the cars, bring it on.

The other good news is that the really amazing pizza shop 2 blocks away delivers beer.

So, I've discovered a VPN issue.  My home router doesn't like VPN, with VPN running my DL spped drops from 45-50Mbps to 2.5-3.5 Mbps.  Plugging directly into the modem fixes it and I'm up to 75Mbps, but the router is on the ground floor at one end of the house and my office is in the basement at the other end.  Someone here at work (full time WFH starts tomorrow) is making me up an 80' Ethernet cable right now as a temporary work around, but I may have to buy a new router, and no work wont pay.  So, whats the cheapiest router that plays nice with VPN connections?

my router is really unhappy with VPN over wireless. If I connect to one of the ethernet ports on it te\he VPN connection is fine. The VPNs I use generally struggle over wireless connections.

Yeah... I can VPN over WiFi for light tasks like email and web meetings, but for working I have my docking station hard wired to my router. Which is conveniently 12" away...

In other news, I have working monitors! Woohoo!

For whatever reason, I had to use a HDMI cable for the right monitor instead of a VGA cable and adapters. So now I have to go out after work and buy another HDMI cable since I stole this one from my TV setup.

What router do you have?  I'd just Google the issue.  It should be pretty well known.  There may be some settings to change, or you can load on different software that gives more control (DDWRT or similar).

That's pretty common no matter the router(wireless).  So much so that it's the first thing I check to make sure it's off when presented with slow speeds.

Here is the home office with all its mess/distractions. Probably one of my favorite places to hang out.

If I didn't know better, I'd think that somehow my bedroom from 10 years ago was on the conference call laugh

It makes for a great foot stool. The leather on mine is starting to fail unfortunately. It's embossed with a design that is pretty cool.

The video quality was often such that I would not be able to rule that out as a possibility.

On an average day, how many times does your desk get pooped on?

I don't track actual numbers, but I would say bringing the birds into the office to hang out increases the frequency by a good 40%.

I'm no mathologist, but that math means something or someone is pooping on your desk when the birds are not there.

On my  slow VPN, I made up a really long (like 80') Ethernet to get me from the router to the computer (opposite ends of house on different floor).  Unfortunately the cable was CAT 5 not CAT 6, but possibly due to the length it doesn't help at all.  Still in low single digit download speeds.  The Router is whatever ATT gave us free years ago.  I'd like to find a cheap router (sub $100) that will work if I can.

I can't offer anything directly helpful but I'm surprised 80ft doesn't work fine.  That's 1/4 the limit.

I use a powerline network adapter like this: https://smile.amazon.com/D-Link-PowerLine-1000-Gigabit-DHP-601AV/dp/B00F0RC97A to connect from my office to my router.  Mine are cisco devices.  I plugged them in 7 years ago and haven't touched them since.  The only gotcha is that the two plugs have to be on the same leg of your house power, assuming you have 240AC.

Financial experts and leading economists have predicted 18 of the last 5 great economic downturns. The worst thing

If they gave it to you, inquire about swapping it for a newer faster one.

I have employees stuck in CA and one stuck in there house because there kids was exposed to another kids who's parents tested positive.  Others have kid baby sitting issues and others I think are just using this as a way to get time off and I am ok with that as well.

So With everyone not in the office I decided to moved my big workstation home so I can join the work at home party.  The reality is that I have had a home office that is plugged in to my office for years. I mostly use it for more mundane things like finance, word docs and light AutoCAD stuff.  I have a need to be working on some large models so the powerhouse computer came home Friday with my collection of screens that I use with it.  Last week I was the only one at my office so I figured why not just work at home.

I have worked from home since the late 1990's as I use to travel for the Engineering firm I was with.  At my other company I was worked from home on average 3 days a week

I have been really lucky in that my employees have always been self starters and don't need me there to motivate them and very rarely do I need to give direction. Most of the time they use me as a sounding board for there ideas.  When I am not doing boring boss things like finance and marketting and what not I am trying to find ways to help them do there jobs faster or easier and yes if I can make it more fun that also.

I am finding that at least two of my employees are actually getting much more work done working remotely.  I am not sure why this is but as a company owner I have just been running with it.  I am going to have to speak with them at some point if it continues this week.  I think that at least one of them is afraid that they may be the first to get cut and is over compensating as I see them putting in way more hours than they should be and they are a salary employee so again I am going to have to see what is up.  The other concern I have as a boss is that I don't want them getting over stressed and burning out because of everything.  As a "Boss" I am always concerned about this and with things are they are now I feel I need to be extra carful about not letting my employees get over stressed and fixated on"the job".  Yes I worry about these things. Like it or not my employees are my extended family.  Decisions I make effects husbands/wives, kids even there pets.  Being a boss is not all it is cracked up to be sometimes.  I am not sure people get that.

I am lucky as I have a good amount of backup $$$$ in the company so there is no worries. I have sent an email to everyone telling them not to worry about payroll but still I see that some really are.  Maybe it is more that there spouses jobs are less stable and they need both incomes.  As the boss you have to walk the line of knowing what is going on so if you can you can help and not prying to much.

Anyway just my ramblings.  Maybe it will give those that are employees a look in to the world of what your boss / company owners is dealing with at the moment.

Home office photo will be later today once I get things set up adding 3 monitors to my desk (really on old dining room table) is going to be an issue.
