Later this year, at the Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auctions, a pair of “Twin Lolas” will be auctioned off in Mid-August in Monterey. If you are familiar with your sports car racing history, you will recognize them: The Lola-Mazda T616’s.
These cars were Lola’s successful effort to regain sports car racing dominance. The T616 of 1984 accomplished its singular purpose by winning the brutal 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s most important endurance race. They were powered by Mazda’s then-new 13B rotary engine and made around 300 horsepower.
About 20 years after their historic 1984 season, both cars were restored by Jim Busby and Rick Knoop, who co-drove the cars in their prime. Both cars are race-ready, offered with exceptional spares, and are well-known to racing fans for their many classic entries including the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Monterey Historics.
