What’s in store for Porsche’s next GT4?

A recent social media post from our friends and neighbors at BGB Motorsports detailed some of their plans for supporting their Porsche-based racing efforts in 2025 and 2026.

Long story short, BGB is concentrating on the Porsche Sprint Challenge and dialing things back on their IMSA GT4 effort with the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport that has proven competitive for Tom Collingwood, Spencer Pumpelly and Andy Lally so far in 2025.

Notable in the release, however, was this comment, buried several paragraphs down from the beginning of the article: “On the horizon though is a new Porsche GT4 offering for the 2027 season based on an entirely different model and it will start an exciting new chapter in Porsche motorsport history.”

Say what now?

Indeed, Porsche may have to make some sort of dramatic shift for their GT4 efforts, as the next 718, due as a 2027 model, is slated to be an EV. Porsche has expressed intent to produce a higher-performance version of this forthcoming electric Cayman, and even produce a motorsport version based on that high-performance version. And, indeed, an electrified current model Cayman GT4 has been making appearances at high-profile events like Goodwood in the past year or so.

But there’s no indication that the internationally homologated GT4 spec will be making the transition to electric or even hybrid power anytime soon. Which puts some context on BGB’s statement that Porsche’s next GT4 car “will be based on an entirely different model.”

Does Porsche go the route of Ford, Aston Martn and McLaren, and produce GT3 and GT4 versions of their signature sports car, the 911? Ready-to-race 911s are already available in GT3 spec as well as Porsche Cup spec, so maybe a GT4 version could round out Porsche 911 dominance the way the Ford Mustang GT3, GT4 and Dark Horse R give Mustang racers options to climb the ladder.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package seems pretty insane as it is. An EV GT4 car? That'll be wild.

992.2 Carrera GT4 would be pretty darn cool, and probably be reminiscent of when the 991 ran in Grand Am/IMSA CTSCC.

The good news is that whatever Porsche comes up with, it's going to be rad as heck.

It will be very interesting to see what they come out with. A GT4 version of the cup car would be great. For those pondering an EV as a replacement, has IMSA, SRO, or USAC released a rulebook or eluded to the fact they will allow EVs to run in those series in the future?

If I had to guess. Narrow body 992, smaller wheels/tires, 5 lug
