Mail event? Is Cliff Claven or Newman sponsoring a car? :)
We’ve been here at Daytona International Raceway for a few days now celebrating this great event with our readers. Now that we are nearing the halfway point in the race we want to catch everyone up on the happenings and share some of the sights.
First, the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. The Plumb brothers, Matt and Hugh, took the overall victory in the Rum Bum Porsche 911. Matt Plumb led last year’s Daytona event until a mechanical failure forced him out with just four laps to go.
The Street Tuner class winner was a shock to everyone. Spencer Pompelly had joined Rennsport One for their debut in the Series. His teammate, Luis Rodriguez Jr., was also a first-timer in this series. The green team ended up running away with the victory in a very hotly contested Street Tuner field.
Now for the main event. At the moment we are just about nine hours into the race. Chip Ganassi Racing has enjoyed a tight grasp on the lead throughout the race, but with the 02 car ducking into the garages it’s anyone’s race.
Meanwhile at the Grassroots Motorsports Experience, we’ve enjoyed hanging out and talking with readers new and old. The Grassroots Motorsports corral is filled with very interesting cars—we aren’t sure how a couple of them are street-legal. If you weren’t able to join us this year, try coming to the next one. It’s worth it.
