SCCA Road Racing Goes Virtual This Weekend

Thanks to the cancellation or postponement of all motorsports events nationwide, racers, autocrossers and track enthusiasts are currently without any real-world outlets to exercise their cars this weekend–or likely anytime in the near future.

The Sports Car Club of America is doing their best to fill the gap starting this weekend by launching a new sim racing initiative. Using the iRacing platform, participants will be able to sign in to a specific SCCA server and participate in three different race events on Saturday, March 28, as part of the first ever eSCCA Super Tour.

Action kicks off at 2 p.m. Eastern with practice and qualifying for Spec Racer Ford, followed by the feature races at 3:40. Skip Barber Formula 2000 cars get rolling at 5 p.m., and the day is capped off with Global MX-5 Cup action starting at 8 p.m.. Sessions are open to any iRacing user holding an iRacing D license or above.

With further shutdowns of public gatherings looming, this may be the spring and summer of virtual motorsport. You may even spot a GRM staff member or two in some of the sessions at the virtual Super Tour. If you do, you have to let us by, though, because we’re doing a story.

From Kelly's Heroes "Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful ?"

I'm just mad because even given all these cancellations I'm probably still not going to get my car done in time for many events.

Want to watch the virtual action at the eSCCA Super Tours this weekend, but don't feel like getting your virtual fenders wrinkled? SCCA will be streaming coverage of all the action starting at 2pm eastern on their YouTube channel

You may even see a GRM editor or two competing in a few sessions. We'll the ones steering with the keyboard.

This just in from the ever-pleasant Tom O'Gorman regarding today's announcers:

Gregg Ginsberg and Larry MacLeod. Gregg is the head Super Tour announcer, Larry is the head Solo Nats announcer. Both do Runoffs commentary too.
