V6 Miata Dominates All at Buttonwillow

A Mazda Miata that can outrun supercars? Good-Win Racing is proving once again that the Answer is still the answer.

The results for the Global Time Attack event at Buttonwillow just floated across our desk. At their last event of the year, Good-Win Racing’s project V6 Mazda Miata, driven by Ryan Passey, absolutely dominated the Limited Rear-Wheel-Drive class, beating all comers—including Porsche 911 GT3s, a Dodge Viper ACR and a gaggle of modified Honda S2000s—by almost three whole seconds.

In fact, his 1:48.483 lap time destroyed the previous lap record for a Miata at Buttonwillow: 1:52.2 by a 400-horsepower roadster wearing Hoosier tires. And Ryan was restricted to street tires to run in his class. However, he wouldn’t hold that record for long. Another modified roadster built by Supermiata managed a blistering 1:44.984 time on the way to an Unlimited Rear-Wheel-Drive class victory.

How did he do it? Driver and builder Ryan Passey has a lot of tricks up his sleeves, including that wild downforce-inducing bodywork and a GM V6 engine swap from V8 Roadsters. Want to learn more about this beast? Check out the build thread.

Actually, it was a turbo NB fielded by Supermiata that "dominated all" the RWD cars, winning Unlimited RWD. They turned a 1:44.983 - 3.5 seconds faster than the V6 - so the Miata lap record was seriously reset that weekend. Supermiata used a Miata engine with 16 psi of boost, yielding about 300 rwhp.

Ryan did well for sure, but you can't ignore the results of the faster Miata. It was a hell of a weekend for Miatas in GTA.

Wait, so Supermiata brought only 300 horsepower and beat 911 GT3s and a Viper ACR?  An article that explores the technical reasons behind that upset is in order.  Unless it was just driver ability...

Reminds me of a 250 HP Birkin (Lotus 7 replica) winning NASA's super unlimited endurance series against, among others, a turbocharged Viper. That's a bunch of years ago, but my point is that those who get carried away with HP miss a lot of the picture.

Adding cylinders is a bit like giving David steroids before his showdown with Goliath in that it sort of blurs the line, but who doesn't like rooting for the underdog?

Sounds like these two Miatas are Uberdogs. Will there be a magazine story about these two cars and their drivers?
