The Very First Nissan Silvia Was an Unsuccessful Hand-Built Sports Car

Nissan’s venerable S13- and S14-chassis Silvias—both known as the 240SX here in North America—may be a mainstay in the drift and sports car worlds, but that popularity and success may not have been possible without a relatively obscure Nissan sports car built in the mid-to-late ‘60s.

First revealed to the Japanese public in 1964 at the Tokyo Motor Show, the original Silvia was hand-built using the underpinnings from the 1600, with production commencing the following year in 1965.

Of course, because of the car’s hand-built nature, this CSP311-chassis Silvia was neither inexpensive to buy nor easy to produce, resulting in a final build number of less than 600 examples when production was halted in 1968.

In total, six generations of the S-chassis would spawn from the CSP311 Silvia, and although the original car was never formally imported into North America, at least one exists here in Florida. To read more about it, head over to Classic Motorsports.

Somehow the greenhouse and trunk reminds me a lot of the Mazda Protege that everyone is trying to talk Captdownshift out of buying.

The Sylvia's longer hood does balance out the proportions a lot better, though.

I'm stoked that Hot Wheels added this as a casting this year.

Little bit of old Opel in the trunk.

Twelve year old me saw this at the New York Worlds Fair and I was in lust. I didn't know for sure until this article that it was, in fact, a SP310 derivative. Always disappointed it never sold here.
