Your Projects: Building a Replica of the Race Car That Put AMG on the Map

Building a replica has the potential to be as rewarding as owning the real thing. In fact, you can use your imagination to make your take even better than the original.

Case in point: forum user maciekb2002's project of turning a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL into a replica of the "Red Pig," a 300 SEL that AMG built in its early days as Mercedes-Benz's tuning arm.

A V8 from a later 500 SEL will power this project, mounted to a six-speed manual transmission from a BMW 540, so this version of the Red Pig won't be an exact replica.

The most recent update from maciekb2002 covers the addition of hand-hammered fender flares and an appropriate shade of bright-red paint.

Yes, totally. And glad to see that, yes, giant auxiliary lights make everything better.
