Not sure if rally racing is attainable for the average enthusiast? Forum member Nonack (you may know him by his creative screen name) is diving into stage rally with his trusty Merkur XR4Ti. He just recently finished the Black River Stages event with NASA Rally Sport, claiming fourth place in his class and seventh overall.

Yeah, I'll ask about budget. What's it costing you to run this vehicle? Do you drive it to the event or trailer?
We tow it to events on an open trailer behind a 1998 GMC Yukon, which is also our service rig. Black River Stages had a cheap (for rally) entry+notes fee of $650, and we spent about $400 on hotel and food (for us and crew members) about $300 on fuel, and chewed through what I estimate to be $300 of tires (used rears, new fronts). So that's $1650 for this event alone, not counting the damage to the car- although we have spares of everything we broke.
In theory you could drive the car there, but then you'd be without a service rig to hold spares/fuel/tires/move crew around. It really helps to have multiple vehicles on your team at the event.
If you're asking about the cost of the other, non event specific parts of the equation, I don't have exact numbers, but would estimate that between the parts car, trailer, rally car, and spares I have about $10k into everything. The Yukon gets used for commuting and errands regularly as it's one of only two somewhat reasonable vehicles that we own, so I don't count it as existing only for the rally effort.
